Hilary Duff Heads Into Summer Triple threat Hilary Duff (music, film and television) is poised for a very busy summer consisting of a new movie, a new album (the soundtrack to said movie), and a tour. Duff's latest film, A Cinderella Story opens nationwide July 16. On Tuesday July 13th, the soundtrack to the film will be released. It will feature four new songs from Hilary, including a cover of The Go-Go's seminal "Our Lips Are Sealed." Interestingly enough, the original song debuted in 1981, seven years before Duff was born! "I love 'Our Lips Are Sealed,'" explains the youthful Hilary. "The Go-Go's recorded this song in 1981, but I'm able to relate to the message today, probably 'cause it's still good advice. Haylie (Duff's younger sister) and I wanted to do a duet, and this seemed perfect because we used to sing it around the house when we were little. We've always worked well off of each other." In addition to the soundtrack, Duff is already busy working on a new album, slated for a September 28th release date. Another of her films, Raise Your Voice, will hit theaters on October 9th, and if that weren't enough, she's currently in Toronto filming A Perfect Man. Hilary and her band--Ty Stevens, guitar; Jason Cook, guitar; Shauney Baby, drums; Kayle Truman, bass; Loren Gold, keyboard; and triplets Abbey, Baili and Rachel Sibucao on backing vocals--will hit the road for her Most Wanted summer arena tour beginning July 20th in Worcester, Mass., and concluding date September 8th in Portland, Oregon. Haylie will also be a special guest on Hilary's Most Wanted Tour Duff will warm-up for the tour with an appearance on Good Morning America and a live slot at GMA's Summer Concert Series. With four forthcoming films in various stages of production, you might wonder how Hilary Duff even has time for a musical career. But that career is about to kick into high gear: Duff just announced a brace of summer tour dates to fill in the time when she's not working on the follow-up to her 2003 album, Metamorphosis, which is due in the fall. Duff will return to the concert stage for three spring shows in California. These include a date on May 15 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, as part of the KIIS-FM festival Wango Tango, and a May 16 charity show at the House of Blues in West Hollywood. Tickets for the benefit will be auctioned online and proceeds will go to Kids With a Cause, which helps disadvantaged youths by enhancing their self-esteem and confidence. Hilary & Haylie PASADENA, California Jessica and Ashlee Simpson aren't the only sisters in pop poised to have a sizzling summer. Hilary and Haylie Duff are touring together, recording albums and releasing their first duet. The single, a cover of the Go-Go's' 1981 classic "Our Lips Are Sealed," will be featured on the soundtrack to Hilary's movie "A Cinderella Story," opening July 16. "We really wanted to work together, and my label knew that, so we found this song and we're like, 'Yes! We have to do this!,' " Hilary explained excitedly backstage at Saturday's Wango Tango On-Air festival, where the sisters debuted their version. "I thought it fit in the movie because there's a secret relationship going on in 'A Cinderella Story' and it's kind of like a secretive song," Haylie said. "The movie's kind of about what goes on in high schools and how people are mean to each other, so I think that it fits really good," Hilary added. The Duffs recently shot a video for "Our Lips Are Sealed" in Toronto with director Chris Applebaum (Britney Spears, Fountains of Wayne). "The video is awesome," Hilary said. "We were in a car driving around the city and we were in a fountain, which was really fun, but it was freezing outside." "We had the best time up there," Haylie said. "We had the whole band with us and our family, so it was a really cool experience." Haylie, who wrote "Inner Strength" on Hilary's Metamorphosis (see "Can't Get Enough Duff? Get Ready To Meet Haylie"), is currently helping her sister on the follow-up as well as recording her own album, which will likely feature a Hilary appearance. "We're halfway finished and it will be out in August," Haylie said. Hilary's album will likely follow a month or two later. "I've recorded like four songs and we have almost all the material picked out," Hilary said. "I'm writing with Haylie a lot and I get to collaborate with the writers, so it's very personal and I love stuff that we have so far. And I don't think I've ever really said that before, like, I feel so cool about it. I'm really proud of it. I can't wait to record it and get it out there." Hilary is planning to work with the same stable of producers who manned Metamorphosis, including the Matrix (Avril Lavigne), John Shanks (Michelle Branch) and Meredith Brooks (Jennifer Love Hewitt). "If it ain't broke, why fix it, right?" Hilary said. Haylie will be opening for Hilary on her summer tour, and the evenings will end with the "Our Lips Are Sealed" duet. Hilary Duff Does Drama, Screams For Three Days Grace On 'Summer' Set LOS ANGELES The club was crammed, Three Days Grace were rocking the stage and a blonde on the shoulders of a dude in the front row was flashing devil horns. It was a typical rock concert except for one small detail. The blonde was pop starlet Hilary Duff. And while the singer/actress has been listening to heavier music lately, she was actually at this show to work; her afternoon with Three Days Grace and several hundred extras was being captured for a scene in her upcoming movie "Heart of Summer". "Basically what happens [before the concert scene] is my dad and my brother got in a big fight because my brother's fighting for me to go to this [performing arts] school because he knows that I'll do a great job there," Duff explained. "And he gets grounded ... and I had gotten tickets for his graduation present to this concert ... so we sneak out and we drive there and we go to the concert and we have a great time." Sounds like another fluffy Duff movie, right? Not exactly. On the way home from the concert, her brother, played by Jason Ritter ("Freddy vs. Jason"), is killed by a drunk driver. Duff's character learns later that her brother had secretly signed her up to attend a summer session at the arts school in Los Angeles. "She really wants to go to because she has a really great voice, but she has to kind of lie to her dad to get there and her aunt and her mom are in on it," Duff said. "But at the same time, she's like, 'I don't know if I should go because it's so soon after my brother dies.' "She's just going through a lot of stuff and she's kinda the type of person that bottles it all in," she continued. "She has a very strict dad and he kind of wants everything his way. And her whole entire life, she's just gone along with it. ... Her brother's always been the type of person pushing to get out [of their small Arizona town]. And she's always just gone with the flow and now she wants out." David Keith, who has played villains in dozens of movies (most recently "Daredevil"), plays Duff's father, while Rita Wilson ("Runaway Bride") plays her mom and Rebecca De Mornay ("Identity") plays her aunt. John Corbett ("My Big Fat Greek Wedding") and Oliver James ("What a Girl Wants") also co-star as a teacher at the school and Duff's love interest, respectively. "This is my first step toward working on a more dramatic movie," said Duff, whose credits include "Cheaper by the Dozen," "Agent Cody Banks" and "The Lizzie McGuire Movie." " 'A Cinderella Story,' which is the movie that comes out before ['Heart of Summer'], definitely has a little more edge to it," Duff explained. "[My character] deals a lot with her father dying and with not being accepted at school, but the movies are totally, totally different. It's a little more serious, it's a little more older. "I'm not saying I totally wanna go there right now, though, you know," she added, smiling. That's because, at the moment, she was having too much fun going to a rock concert. "It's really funny, because I have been on tour lately and people just want to touch your hand and they get so excited and I didn't know what that was like," she said. "I didn't know too much about Three Days Grace before we had started the filming, but I really love their music now. And it's funny to be on the other side, like 'Ahh,' screaming crazy, you know, being obsessed with somebody. It was a little awkward at first, but I got the hang of it." Hilary Duff: A Performer's Metamorphosis "Why not, take a crazy chance," Hilary Duff sings in one of the songs that helped transform her from an actress to a legitimate pop star. Those words, written by Charlie Midnight and Matthew Gerrard, summarize the risks the teenage actress, her manager, her mother and Walt Disney's Buena Vista and Hollywood Records divisions took when they set out to establish Duff as a music star who could stand without the aid of -- and despite the success of -- her cable TV alter-ego, Lizzie McGuire. "Metamorphosis," the first high-profile album credited to Duff as a solo artist, was released Aug. 26 and certified platinum in early October by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). According to Nielsen SoundScan, the album has since topped sales of 2.5 million. That achievement earns Duff recognition as the first Billboard Platinum Star of 2004. This new series of special reports will profile selected acts that have achieved platinum sales of their first major release or major new releases by established platinum artists. Now, months after "Metamorphosis" topped The Billboard 200 and hit platinum, Duff's move into the music business may seem as if it wasn't much of a "crazy chance" at all, but a slam dunk from the start. However, her success is the result of strategic planning during the course of two years by her manager, Andre Recke; her mother, Susan Duff; a team of songwriters and producers; and executives at Disney's music labels. Recke met Duff backstage at a Radio Disney concert 2 1/2 years ago in Anaheim, Calif., where his client Myra was performing. "There were all these pop acts backstage at the concert," Duff recalls. "They were all getting ready backstage and warming up, and I was like, 'I want to do this so bad.'" By then, Duff was already a star with the tween set, thanks to the hit Disney Channel series "Lizzie McGuire." But becoming a music star was only a dream. The actress took voice lessons when she attended a performing arts school, but singing took a back seat to acting once Duff started landing parts in film and TV projects. But after that initial visit backstage with Recke, Duff was determined to become a music star and started taking vocal lessons again. Before she sang a note, Duff impressed Recke. "When I met Hilary, I knew she had something special," Recke says. "Sometimes you just have that feeling, that, 'Wow, she's a star.'" At the time, Duff was still shooting episodes of "Lizzie McGuire," so Recke took things slowly with the aspiring singer. After rehearsing and working with several different producers, Duff made her recording debut in August 2002 singing "I Can't Wait," the opening track on the "The Lizzie McGuire Movie" soundtrack. Kid-friendly Radio Disney immediately embraced the track, but a subsequent record release also was a major career step. "Disneymania," an album featuring an all-star cast of pop acts singing songs made famous in Disney films and Disneyland attractions, included Duff's version of "The Tiki, Tiki, Tiki Room" sandwiched between songs from such high-profile stars as 'N Sync, Ashanti, Smash Mouth and Christina Aguilera. In an attempt to further establish Duff under her own name, a Christmas album, "Santa Claus Lane," arrived in October 2002. Featuring guest appearances by fellow teen stars Lil' Romeo and Christine Milian, as well as Duff's older sister/songwriter, Haylie, the album sold well enough to peak at No. 2 on Billboard's Top Heatseekers album chart. Meanwhile, Duff began recording her proper full-length debut album while juggling two movie projects. "The Lizzie McGuire Movie," which was in production as sessions began for "Metamorphosis," also spawned a soundtrack featuring Duff. This time she stepped out on two tracks, "Why Not" and "What Dreams Are Made Of." Those two tracks, like "I Can't Wait," received substantial airplay from Radio Disney. But Recke and label executives planned to help Duff reach a more mature audience with "Metamorphosis." Duff herself also wanted to make sure the songs on the album were right for her. "Andre and I and my mom worked very hard to really get good music that I related to and was age-appropriate for me and wasn't just cheesy pop stuff," Duff says. With "So Yesterday," the first single from "Metamorphosis," Duff succeeded on both counts. The song was produced and co-written by hit-making outfit the Matrix and songwriter Charlie Midnight. Although some might accuse Duff's team of trend-hopping by enlisting hot songwriting/producing trio the Matrix -- consisting of Lauren Christy, Graham Edwards and Scott Spock -- after its massive success with Avril Lavigne and her debut, "Let Go," Recke's relationship with the group predates that breakthrough. He hired the threesome to write songs on Myra's self-titled 2001 album, and Midnight wrote some of the original material for Duff's Christmas album. While Duff acknowledges that "Metamorphosis" was carefully planned, she says her foray into music has not been modeled after another artist. "There are definitely people I respect and I love their music, but there was never really an artist that I said, 'I want to be just like them, I love the way their career is going. I love their music.' It wasn't really like that. I wanted to be like myself," she says. With support from top 40 radio and MTV, "So Yesterday" was an out-of-the-box smash. In late August, it topped Billboard's Hot 100 Singles Sales chart, making Duff the first artist in four months who was not affiliated with "American Idol" to top that chart. It also paved the way for "Metamorphosis" to debut at No. 2 on The Billboard 200 for the week ended Sept. 13. Despite a 35% sales drop in its second week, "Metamorphosis" climbed to No. 1. Although she'll focus on her film career during the beginning of this year, Duff plans to play scattered live dates when time allows and eventually return to the studio to record a second album. Duff plans to get more involved in writing songs for her next release. "I love writing, but I feel like you need time to really get in touch with yourself to do that," she says. "On ["Metamorphosis"], I would have liked to have had more time to work with the writers [and] write some more of my own stuff. Hopefully I can do that on my second album." Lindsay Lohan: Tired of Duff Drama NEW YORK - Lindsay Lohan says shes tired of the drama between her and Hilary Duff. The star of the upcoming movie Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen and Duff both dated pop singer Aaron Carter, and had a falling out that reportedly resulted in Duff asking Lohan to leave the premiere of Cheaper by the Dozen, in which Duff co-starred. Lohan now says their spat is silly and unnecessary. I mean, shes doing great. Im a fan of hers. My sister loves her, the 17-year-old Lohan said on ABCs Good Morning America on Tuesday. I just wanted to let her know I have no problems and neither should she. We were friends. When Diane Sawyer asked whether her fight with the 16-year-old Duff was a high school thing, Lohan answered, Yeah. It is the reason why I wanted to finish high school early because it is what you have to deal with in high school, the actress said. When you are working and stuff, the last thing you want to read is someone doesnt like you. Let it go, you know what I mean? I just wanted to clear it up. "Stuff" Charm Treasure Hunt There will be a charm treasure hunt starting at Target and Zellers Stores. Here's how it works. Summary of a Cinderella Story Set at a high school in the San Fernando Valley, this is the story of a " Dorky" girl, Sam Martin (Duff), who lives with her stepmother (Coolidge) and stepsisters, after her father dies, and his diner is taken over by his new wife, who used to be a waitress there and who makes Sam do all the hard work there. Sam has few friends at her high school, where the top of the social ladder is Shelby Cummings (Gonzalo), a girl who is wealthy, spoiled and shallow. Sam's attitude and look changes quickly overnight, however, when her cel phone is found by a mysterious guy (Murray), with whom she soon starts corresponding via notes and e-mails, with the promise looming soon that she will finally get to meet him at the big Halloween school dance... Hilary Duff Gets "Under Avril's Skin" When Avril Lavigne first burst onto the music scene two years ago as a surly 17-year-old, she made a point of defining herself as the antithesis of the pop starlets du jour. Quickly dubbed "the anti-Britney" by the press, Lavigne wanted the world to know that she was the real deal an unglamourous tomboy who liked to skateboard and wear baggy work pants. Now, 19 and ready to release her sophomore album, Lavigne is still telling the world that shes not your average teenage pop star. While Lavigne has already told a few media outlets that her new album is more "mature" than her 2002 debut Let Go, she apparently hasnt grown out of the all-too-common teenage pasttime of making catty remarks about other girls. In the current issue of Newsweek, Avril takes shots at Americas current sweetheart, Hilary Duff. "I read that I was supposedly mad at my fans for dressing like me," Newsweek quotes Lavigne as saying. "They quoted Hilary Duff saying, 'Avril needs to appreciate her fans more and blah, blah, blah.' I'm like, excuse me? First off, it's not even true. I never said that. And second, who the hell cares what she has to say about my fans? Whatever. Hilary Duff's such a goody-goody, such a mommy's girl." After Lavigne admitted that she hadnt actually met Duff, she took on a mocking tone and added, "But Im sure shes really nice and really sweet. Im sure shes all smiles." While we dont approve of these silly teen queen feuds, after seeing the "remake" of Cheaper By The Dozen starring Duff (note: Worst Movie Ever avoid at all costs), weve got to side with Avril on this one. Hilary Duff can jam it. Anyway, if you support Avril Lavigne and her non-starlet ways, you can vote with your dollars later this spring. Her new album, Under My Skin, hits stores on May 25. Hilary Duff Struts Her Less Revealing "Stuff" A young star's mission is to make a mark. But with TV, movies, and music already under her sweet-sixteen belt, Hilary Duff comes clean to etalk DAILY about being a teen design queen. Duff's new clothing line called "Stuff" features fashions and accessories aimed at young girls and teens who share her love of clothes and who agree that you don't have to show your skin to be trendy. "Stuff" also includes a full line of cosmetics, beauty products and accents for the home. So why did this dynamic young actress decide to start a clothing line? "You know, so many people come up to me and say 'Oh, I love your clothes, where do you shop?' And it just felt really right," Duff tells etalk DAILY. But looking cool and dressing appropriately these days can be very tricky. "I really want to push the fact that I think I dress really cool, but I don't necessarily show off. I'm not too revealing and I think that's an important message to get across to young girls specifically," said Duff. "I won't show a lot of skin. Girls can look super stylish without wearing things that their moms will cringe at." The direction of the brand comes directly from Duff herself. Her goal is to make sure that the look and feel of the line is exactly to her taste. "I just remember when I was little how bad I wanted to fit into teen sizes and how I just always wanted to be able to wear what my sister wore. "It's really funny because the younger daughter usually goes into the older kids' closets and steals stuff, but it's the total opposite in my family. She's always stealing my clothes." So now that she's clearly on her way to becoming a fashion maven, which of her outfits does she think are just "So Yesterday?" "I wore this outfit that was by Electric Barbella to the Britney Spears Crossroads premiere, and it was disgusting. It was so bad, I don't know what I was thinking." But Duff doesn't bluff when "dis-clothes-ing" what she can't live without. "Marc Jacobs is my favourite for shoes and purses and stuff, and I like Yanook Jeans." "I like expensive stuff but I also like cheap things ... and I like to take expensive things and cheap things and mix them together. So, is "Stuff" stylish enough for Duff? "One thing that's cool is that there are different parts - one's called Rock and Roll, one's called On the Road. They all relate back to things that happen in my life, so Rock and Roll is how I dress onstage, and On the Road is really funky and showcases all the cool places we've been to." Hilary Duff's new "Stuff" line of clothing and accessories is now available exclusively at Zellers in Canada. Now Hilary Duff can get into both the hearts - and closets - of her biggest fans. |
