Detering saw a cherry tree in full blossom and it made him think about his farm and his family. He decides to leave the infantry but he is quickly caught and court- martialed. 3. What is ironic about the factory owners in Germany? It�s ironic that the factory owners in Germany are wealthy during the war when they really shouldn�t be. 4. What is the only thing the men have to look forward to? The only thing the men have to look forward to is either death, or the hospital. 6. How does Paul react to Kat's death? When Kat dies, Paul is devastated. He feels has nothing to live for now. 7. Why is Paul no longer afraid? Paul is no longer afraid because he feels he has seen all that there is to see and there is nothing left for him to do but die. 8. What is the irony of the book's final sentence? The irony of the last sentence is that Paul�s face was calm when he died. He wasn�t afraid of dying, he was just waiting for it to come. |
