Zermatt Trip 22-23 November 1997

Zermatt

The good news of this year was that we made it! After the huge amounts of snow at this time last year it was a relief that we actually made it to Zermatt. Our prime location was the Hotel Allouette, 10 minutes walk from the Bahnhof.

Ski Day 1: Klein Matterhorn

Deary dear. The six-seater gondolas decided today to become six-seater dodgems! They closed these things early on, from 9am – 9.30am there was no-one progressing up the mountain. At 9.30am they opened the 80 person gondola up to the first station and by 10.15, we were on it! And from there, we made it to the second station and could ski. Well, by 11am this was where we were.

Our first run was preceeded by a 10 minute queue and a 2km drag. Was Zermatt made before chairlifts??! We zinged down this run and straight to the bar. Gluhwein all round please!

Night on the Town

Ski Day 2: Klein Matterhorn

Did I mention that this was the only area of 6 around Zermatt which was open? And the man at the Gornergrat office was a very polite man….NOT!

Anyway, we made it up to the second station to find a cloudy ski area but the sun did break through and presented a lovely afternoon. This made for a quieter day since a large amount of beer and cigars were consumed the evening before. As you do.

So the Zermatt trip has come and gone. I think those who deserve a mention are:

  • Sabina Bundhun for organising all the accomodation
  • Steve Greensill for his Birthday and also for the first time of seeing snow!
  • The 66 for hosting Steve’s Bithday so magnificently!
  • Roberto Giacich for driving us there and back in the Giacich-mobile
  • Tayfun Yilmaz for taking his video camera and thus contributing to the pictures here (not yet!)
  • Rick Amoore for snapping from the video footage
  • Lee Barnett for making these T-Shirts for the boys.
