ABOUT ME!
Hi! My name is Lee Armstrong. I'm 22 years old and am currently to be found in the fine if rainey city of Birmingham (UK), or as it is affectionately known, BRUM! In 2000 I graduated from the university of Birmingham with a degree in Music and am now contemplating the exact nature of the career I wish to persue........... Actually, I've just been offered a job with the Birmingham Royal Ballet. It's only a junior admin position, but I'm very much looking forward to it. It's difficult enough having a mere degree in music, but actuallly getting "a foot in the door" of the arts world is very difficult (I'm finding!). Jobs are few and far between and more often that not require vast amounts of experience. As you may have gathered I am an enthusiastic amature cellist! I also enjoy writing contemporary music. However, info about these things can be found through other links of the front page. My other interests include the internet (you don't say!), russian history and militaria and badminton. Well, when I have time (read that as can be bothered!)

Me and my Cello!!!
I started playing the cello a few weeks before my 12th birthday at my school, the imaginatively named "Stamford School," with Karen Bentley. She taught me (bless her for persisting) there for 7 years until I left to go to university in September 1997. With her help I acheived a distinction in both my grade 5 and grade 8 exams. I took both music GCSE and A level (getting A* and A respectively) there aswell, under Paul White, David Brown and Nicholas Taylor - I have a lot to thank them for too! When I left Stamford to come to Birmingham I had to change teachers of course. Students in the University of Birmingham music department are very fortunate as they are given free lessons at the Birmingham Conservatoire. My new teacher was Jill Heartfield. Although I didn't really appreciate it at the time, she taught me an enormous amount, basically by stripping my technique to the bare bones and starting again. I was forced to change teachers again about half way through my second year due to Jill falling pregnant (Nothing to do with me!). I was dreading that a little I have to say! All was not lost however, as my third teacher was the wondeful Catherine Ardagh-Walter. I love her to bits and owe her a debt of gratitude for believing in me when I didn't really believe in myself. She taught me an enormous amount both technically and about performing. In 18 months, I went from facing the prospect of giving up the cello (as a serious academic persuit) at the end of my second year, to taking a final year recital and getting a IIi for it! What can I say? - I've never meat a more enthusiastic woman. Without her (and Jill and Karen of course) , I wouldn't be where I am today.
