Last Dance Sonnet

she danced onto the scene like wildfire
they forgot the world outside them for a while
his soul no longer seemed so deathly tired
she dried his rain with every saucer-eyed smile
and soon hed found hed lost his soul to her
without a second thought without regret
she gave the world to him on a plate of silver
he threw it away and said they didnt need it
they danced their jig and watched the shining stars
they drove to the ends of the earth and then drove on
he said what is there now that isnt ours
she smiled and said they hadnt traveled far
his shadow woman disappeared at dawn
and he woke up to the smell of burning manure
