Older Poems
by Mike Monroe
she danced onto the scene like wildfire
they forgot the world outside them for a while
his soul no longer seemed so deathly tired
she dried his rain with every saucer-eyed smile
and soon hed found hed lost his soul to her
without a second thought without regret
she gave the world to him on a plate of silver
he threw it away and said they didnt need it
they danced their jig and watched the shining stars
they drove to the ends of the earth and then drove on
he said what is there now that isnt ours
she smiled and said they hadnt traveled far
his shadow woman disappeared at dawn
and he woke up to the smell of burning manure

his head full of memories of lost loves cold pizza
sitting on the table
next to the ash pile

he sat at a plastic table
across from a metal statue
and the statue opened its chest
he looked inside
finding empty shelves that once held the knowledge of the world
now lying in bits and pieces
and chewed on by rats

but one page glowed in the bowels of now
like a shining pearl in the mouth of an oyster
he reached inside and the shell snapped down
but he pulled through the pain
like a wild dog

his new dance started with an electric jolt
a prism of energy in the anatomy of the mind
an opening to thoughts
an airport in the city

he screamed with a smile and ran to everywhere
in his hand a magic wand
that could turn a frown into a smile

he danced like a giant to manic beats
his eyes on fire like golden sunrise
his feet lightning in the summer sky
his soul burning incense
his eyes shining mirrors
his mind an open stream
spilling spring into his world
and his feet came to a stop at the edge of a cliff
as he listened

warmth thought tiger roaring geyser rushing glowing golden nameless sky yellow window waves and sun
waterfall of life and fire day and rushing light

he stood at the border between feelings and words
staring into the sun
no longer in need
he turned and walked home
