The Prince's steward seeks Cinderella in the woods, but does not find her. Instead, he discovers the Baker and his wife, who have obtained one of Cinderella's golden shoes (she lost the other on the steps of the palace as she made her escape). More deception occurs when the Baker's wife denies seeing Cinderella.

The Prince follows close behind his steward, and claims Cinderella's golden slipper as his own, much to the dismay of the Baker and his wife, who had been jubilant at having all the ingredients to break their spell. The Baker's father appears and urges the Prince to "give them the shoe," which the Prince does because he only needs one, after all, to find his elusive Cinderella.
