| Drafting This course introduces students to drafting: both the "standard" method of pencil, paper, and drafting tools, but also the newer and easier way with the use of special computers. First, students practice writing letters and numbers in the proper manner, then work to duplicate a 3D object on paper. The last days of class are spent in the computer room working with a drafting program. |
Electrical Wiring Students learn the tools of the trade and the proper precautionary steps when working with electricity. Students wire up light switches, outlets, and light fixtures in various combinations. They also learn methods of using the proper tools for specific techniques in electrical wiring. This is a good class to take for those that are interested in any form of construction. |
Plumbing Students learn about equipment for working with pipes and connecting pipes and how to properly clean and prepare pipes for putting them together. They learn safety precautions for working with the glue and cleaning materials. Students also work with copper pipes and learn how to correctly and safely solder them together. This class exposes the students to the basics of the plumbing trade. |
Welding This class only accepts a very small number of students. They learn about welding and are also obligated to pay heed to the extreme precautions involved in working with metal. Projects include making dustpans and other household metal items. |
Windows In this class students have to learn the proper methods of taking out old glass, cutting a new piece of glass, and then installing the new glass into the window frame. Once again, safety is stressed. This class can be very helpful for those students who are interested in home repair. |
Woods All Agri-Science students are required to take two woods classes in Agri-Science. First, they are required to learn about the power tools and safety precautions. Once they pass the safety test, students work on the class project of tool boxes. If projects are finished before the class is over, students can work on personal projects or on projects for the department. Skills learned in the Agri-Science woods class can be used in all sorts of construction projects. |
Various Projects Seniors in construction classes work on one community project each year, using the skills they have learned over the years to beautify and help the surrounding towns. Projects have included the Preston Park pavilion and a new office space for the Ledyard Animal Pound. Experience like this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. |
