Large Animal Science

This class concentrates on the care and handling of larger animals like cows, goats, and sheep. Careful attention is paid to sanitation and proper cleanout of stalls. Projects are done with livestock. Some of these projects include breeding pigs and raising them for food, raising and training goats, and taking care of miniature horses.  The project opportunities will increase when the large animal room is completed with the rest of the new center. This class provides an excellent source of hands-on learning and helps students to really get a feel for the amount of care and attention these large animals require.

Ledyard Fair

The upperclass animal science students are in charge of the Poultry Booth at the Ledyard Fair each September.  Along with students from other Agri-Science classes, animal science students plan the fair.  This includes building cages, set-up and break-down of the booth, registration, the children's pet show, and care of the poultry during the show.  With a lot of work being done out of doors, it's a relaxing way to get back into the school year.

Poultry Science

This class covers all aspects of poultry science.  Students learn the various parts of a chicken and how to properly juding show chickens. They study the different types of feathers by "hands-on" work. They learn how to judge the breeds of chickens as well. Diseases of poultry are also discussed. Different bodily functions, like the digestive tract and respiratory system, are also covered in this class.

Small Animal Science

This class teaches the essentials of caring for all small animals, whether it is a pet dog or a turtle.  Importance is placed on animal health as well as sanitation.  Hands on activities include feeding the classroom pets and cleaning cages on a day to day basis.  The new small animal room will increase the amount of classtime devoted to hands-on activity.

Veterinary Technology

This information-intensive class provides a glance into the work required of veterinary technicians in the workplace.  Emphasis is placed on learning terms first, then goes into the proper handling of animals and the protocol followed in a vet checkup.  Some hands-on activities allow for textbook information to be put to use.  It is a great class for anyone with an interest in becoming a vet or a vet tech, though it is also quite beneficial to all animal science majors.
