Sakura Wars Taisen
GameBoy Color

Introduction

Think strategy RPG... with dating, and a mecha theme. Originally released in 1999 (Japan) Sakura Wars spawned an anime series of the same name.

The title appeared first in two installments on the Sega Saturn - and Sega Japan made the decision to use the game to try and increase their market share by pushing handheld sales through the Nintendo GBC.

The game is set in 1919, leading to another interesting twist; the mechs are steam powered.

Unique Concept

What makes the game unique is that it interfaces with a pocket pedometer/Pikachu color designed to allow the wearer to take care of one of the female Sakura characters rather than the usual electronic pet.

This Pocket Sakura has the ability to communicate with the GBC via infra-red, allowing you to unlock new aspects of the game and transfer 'power' between the two devices.

What to watch out for...

In Japan, the Sakura Wars Taisen game, along with the Pocket Sakura were sold, for a limited time as a bundle. Although the game is in Japanese in this version, it is set to become collectible.

Even more desirable is the Sakura Wars Taisen/GBC combo pack, which features a pink translucent GameBoy color, and the game, although no Pocket Sakura. Again, this is Japanese only.

We classify both items as 'future antiques'. Don't pay over the odds for them right now, but they are a sound investment in themselves. Get them sealed or mint if you can.
