Below are some words of wisdom I believe hold true about travel.  Many of these I would impart on clients when I worked for STA Travel before sending them on their ways. 
1. It's either a good time, or a good story.  And sometimes it's both.

2.  You don't take a Trip, a Trip takes you.

3.  See less places, see more of each place.

4.  Always carry a corkscrew.

5.  When traveling by train, sit in the compartments, they're more sociable than the airline style seats.

6.  Always have a money belt.

7. Have back ups on your back ups.

8.  When planning a trip in a limited time frame, always leave some days open.  If you're going for six weeks, leave ten days free at the outset.  That way, an extra day here or there won't cut into something else.

9.  Get
flexible airline tickets, and make sure you're clear on the rules before leaving. 

10.  "Have to," is a phrase should not be used while traveling.
