Eagle Creek Ultimate Journey
aka Le Bete (The Green Beast)
When you're backpacking, your pack becomes your home.  Most people take quite a bit of time choosing the pack that they take with them.  My current pack is the third pack I've travelled with, and by far it is my favorite.  I've had it since 2001, and over the years have made my own alterations to it.  The main pack open both from the top and from the back meaning that I can open it up fully to pack but also just open the top to easily pull things out or stuff things in.  It has a separate sleeping bag compartment.  On the back is a small pocket for odds and ends.  In the main bag is a small pocket that I keep pens in as well as a separate compartment for a camel pack which I essentially use as my filing cabinet.  There is also a removable day pack, but unlike most Eagle Creek bags this one rides on top of the main pack, as opposed to riding on the back.  The day pack is expandable so it either can be an oversized fanny pack or a backpack.
