I think Douglas Adams had it wrong.  The single most useful thing you can take on the road is not a towel, it's a sarong.  It can do all the same things as a towel,  the drying bit, it makes a better sheet, and it can be worn.  The one I have at the moment I bought in Greece in 2001, either in Corfu or Ios.
