Raising Self-Esteem

Many (if not most) self-injurers have a very low sense of self-esteem. This exercise may help with that, and help you to remember that you are worthwhile, and that you are a good person.

Write a list of everything you have achieved or things you have done that you are proud of. For example you could write down exam or sporting achievements. You can write down aspects of yourself that you like - such as that you're funny, or clever, or good at singing. If you can't think of much yourself, try asking your friends or family what they think your good points are.

Get as many things written down as you can, and tack the list to the wall or somewhere else that you can see it. Every day, reflect on your good points, say them to yourself, and remember that you are a person to be proud of.

Whenever you feel particularly low or want to hurt yourself, read your life. You deserve to be cared for, and you deserve to love yourself. Your list may help you to remember that.
