467th AAA AW Battalion (SP)

V-2 Rocket
On Sep 8, 1944 the first 12-ton V-2 rocket struck London. More than a thousand would follow. The toll was 2,700 killed and 6,250 injured. Britain had several defenses against the V-1 Buzz Bomb; however, the V-2 approached it's target screaming down from an altitude of 10 miles. Aircraft and AAA guns could not touch it. The only defense was a heavy bombing campaign against the launch sites on the continent. Despite the Allied advances across France and Germany, the V-2 rocket continued to pound England as late as March 1945 at a rate of 60 per day.
