Background:

Leavers and Takers are terms first introduced in 1992, in the award-winning novel Ishmaelby Daniel Quinn Two sequels, The Story of B ('97), and My Ishmael (98) are also about Leavers and Takers.

(To orderbooks, use Daniel Quinn's website)

So far, Leavers.Org is without reference to the sequels My Ishmael and The Story of B ) and only to Ishmael and Beyond Civilization ('99), Daniel Quinn's latest. So far, the page doesn't reference Providence ('94) and A Newcomer's Guide to the AfterLife ('97), two more Daniel Quinn books.

Leavers were also the focus of the recent major motion picture, Instinct, starring Anthony Hopkins, Cuba Gooding Jr, and Donald Sutherland.

New Tribal Ventures.Com is Daniel Quinn's primary webpage, though Ishmael.org is also listed as his site.

Leavers.Org is inspired by the global social crisis occuring since domination/competition based civilizations have overcome tribal societies.

I have taken it on because I identified strongly with the story of Ishmael. I recommend this book very strongly. I hope that key passages of the book will be available here, with the intention that more of us will learn of and read the entire book.

For my purposes: Leavers is a broad term for people who would be free of domination. In the big picture, most of human history and growth occured in the context of hunters and gatherers pursuing survival and minding their own business.

In recent millenia, organized societies have evolved that intentionally stifle individual freedom, sometimes for the purpose of centralizing wealth and power among an elite group of dominators, with side-effect of damaging the quality of life for everyone else, particuarly Leavers and wildlife.

These dominators are "Takers," who forcefully take more than they need for the purpose of increasing their future power.

Ishmael is an exploration into how this happened and why, leaving us with the question of what to do about it. I expect that Quinn's more recent books offer solutions. To start, this homepage is a discussion of my own personal knowledge of these issues.

Leaver societies are most easily identified as self-sufficient tribal societies that populated the entire Earth for millenia. With industrialization magnifiying the power of taker dominators, most Leaver socities have effectively collapsed, becoming engulfed in exploding societies pursuing goals of taker domination.

This includes of fall of native American tribes. For thousands of years, many tribes existed in the Americas, for the most part living in peace. These tribal people had entirely different philosophies from the the European invaders

A group of Berkeley activists are laboring to start a "land trust leaver healing organization," to establish a tribal work ethic and permanent rural location where members will be able to grow food and orchards. How can we address mankinds dilemma?

Humans need tribal societies to live in, but tribes, and the earth,

have fallen victim to taker domination.

How can new tribes organize, and thrive, in the modern world?

"Leavers Org" essentially refers to "organizing to protect leavers from taker domination", (from keeping what they take and/or enslaving innocent tribespeople.)

Taker domination has thrived when dominators were able to keep what they took, leaving the peaceful tribespeople with less. New tribes face the same problem. If they thrive, they are at such risk from takers that they need freedom-stifling protective measures.

So how can tribes organize forsuccess? Leavers.Org may become a forum for addressing this topic.

(Furthermore, I am not talking about elitist costly getaways, but organizing progress that will work for the world.)

Goal of Leavers.Organizing?
Before reading Beyond Civilization, the original purpose of Leavers.Organizing was to help identify efforts to secure land against taker domination. Ideally, people should have permanent lifetime rights to be able to grow your own food. grow /security for . Particularly lifetime security for access to arable land, without being part of taker domination that has destroyed tribes.

This spring Leavers.Organizing will monitor the progress of efforts for a land trust where people would sign up to plant orchards and gardens, where we could easily obtain lifetime security to care for the land and trees. The project is essentially to organize a new tribal organization to improve the land and protect it legally. Prior to planting orchards, (temporary) tree nurseries are taking shape in Berkeley.

Immediate priorities:

choose land

-organize membership agreement and a few parties

-plant gardens and care for tree nursery in Oakland and Berkeley.

PRAISE FOR THE AWARD-WINNING ISHMAEL

"From now on I will divide the books I have read into two categories--the ones I read before Ishmael and those I read after."

-Jim Britell, Whole Earth Review

"Daniel Quinn has written two of the most unnerving and transformative books in recent history. The first was Ishmael; The Story of B is the other, a compelling 'humantale' that will unglue, stun, shock, and rearrange everything you've learned and assume about Western civilization and our future."

--Paul Hawken, Author of Natural Capitalism

"As suspenseful, inventive, and socially urgent as any fiction or nonfiction you are likely to read this or any other year."

--The Austin Chronicle

PRAISE FOR BEYOND CIVILIZATION

"As always with Quinn, his argument is crystalline and reads like a thriller. He shows us that getting 'beyond' the mess of civilization doesn't mean changing human nature or setting off a revolution. We need only breathe new life into an ancient human strategy for survival. Quinn's plan is inspiring and devilishly clever."

--John Briggs, Author of Seven Life Lessons of Chaos

"Beyond Civilization is the most solid, real, practical, and you-can-really-do-it book you'll ever find on how to save the world. Daniel Quinn has again proven he is one of our century's greatest and most insightful thinkers. The re-tribablization of the world: what an extraordinary possibility!"

--Thom Hartmann, author of The Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight

Page 3 from the book (it's almost an introduction)

A fable to start with.

Once upon a time life evolved on a certain planet, bringing forth many different social organizations-packs, pods, flocks, troops, herds, and so on. One species whose members were unusually intelligent developed a unique social organization called a tribe.

Tribalism worked well for them for millions of years, but there came a time when they decided to experiment with a new social organization (called civilization) that was hierarchal rather than tribal. Before long, those at the top of the hierarchy were living in great luxury, enjoying perfect leisure and having the best of everything. A larger class of people below them lived very well and had nothing to complain about. But the masses living at the bottom of the hierarchy didn't like it at all. They worked and lived like pack animals, struggling just to stay alive.

"This isn't working," the masses said. "The tribal way was better. We should return to that way." But the ruler of the hierarchy told them, "We've put that primitive life behind us forever. We can't go back to it."

"If we can't go back," the masses said, "then let's go forward--on to something different."

"That can't be done," the ruler said, "because nothing different is possible. Nothing can be beyond civilization. Civilization is a final, unsurpassable invention."

"But no invention is ever unsurpassable. The steam engine was surpassed by the gas engine. The radio was surpassed by television. The calculator was surpasseed by the computer. Why whould civilization be different?"

"I don't know why it's different," the ruler said, "it just is."

But the masses didn't believe this--and neither do I.

-The beginning of Beyond Civilization (c)1999 Daniel Quinn
