| Chapter 16: Luke had plans that night but he never planned on Attila doing a double shift that night. She was the one nurse that took her job serious and never shirked her duties and she was the one nurse that he couldn't seek out on. So, Luke was forced to sit in his room for the night. Normally, with the other nurses, Luke could go out and explore the town and come back later in the night without anyone wiser. Tonight, he wanted to pick up a few things but he now was forced to put them off for one night. Attila walked in right lights out and handed a cup of coffee. "I heard that you are a night owl. So, I figured you might want to share a cup with me. We haven't been the best of terms and I thought we would try again." Luke looked at her and then the cup. At first, he didn't drink but after a time the coffee did look good and he never dreamed that she would drug him. He found out other wise after finishing the coffee. He found that he was having trouble staying awake. It didn't take much in the state Luke was in, for the nurse to get him into bed and just as the world went dark. He heard her say. "Mr. Spencer, that drink will make sure you stay put this time. I know you go out when the others are on duty but you will not do it on my shift. I would have turned you in to the doctor but at least you do not return back drunk and that is a plus. The problem is that I have lots to do tonight and watching you are not on my list. So, sleep tight." and Luke last clear thought was that how much he hated that woman. Luke was on his bed fast asleep back at the house when he was suddenly kicked out of bed. He landed hard on the floor and looked up coldly at whom had the nerve of waking him in that manor. Luke's heart felt like it stopped as he saw his father standing over him with the same cold empty stair that he had when he was a child. "You are a fool. How could you fall for that old trick?" the man boomed. Luke almost covered his ears because the sound was so loud. "What are you doing here?" Luke asked. He figured he was dreaming and tries as he might. He couldn't wake up. He was stuck like this until the drug he was give wore off and the problem was he didn't know how long that would be. "I have been here. You are Me.," the man said. "I'm nothing like you," Luke snapped as he got to his feet. "Oh, yes you are. You did a good number on your kid and now you put him in his place. I'm here to make sure that Doctor Collins didn't stop your progress. You are doing so well. Why stop now." and with that the man reached out and pulled Luke into a down the hall and into Lucky's room. He found Lucky in the closet with Foster at his side looking fearfully at the door. "He spent a lot of nights like this. You finally made me proud when you put your son in his place." his father said in a cold empty voice. "You make me sick. I spent years trying to make you proud and it takes me terrorizing my son to do it. If that is how you measure being a man, I don't want any part of it." and with that Luke tried to get away but his father pulled him toward him. "You don't get it. You and me are one. I am as much of part of you as that boy is." He said glaring coldly down at the shadow on the floor that resembled Lucky. "Oh no your not," a woman said and with one hard shove. Luke's father was shoved out of the room and vanished from sight. At first the light that covered the woman was hard to see through but slowly Luke's sight came around and he saw Laura standing in front of him. He could tell she was upset from the look on her face and he couldn't blame her. "Hi, Angel." Luke said a little unsure how to act. "Don't' call me Angel. Right now, I am very upset with you." Laura said with her hands on her hips. "I don't like myself much right now but I am trying to make up for it. I'm at hospital putting up with Attila the Hun and not because I want to." Luke said trying not to snap at her but he failed. "You think that is going to make up for what you did to our son. Luke you don't even knows what you did. Well, sweet heart, I'm going to show you that and more. When I am done, you will do what I say and how I say it or Luke Spencer. I will hunt you for the rest of your life." and with that they vanished from sight. Luke looked around and saw him and Lucky sitting at the breakfast table. Lucky was dressed for school but he looked half dead at the moment. Luke suddenly remembered when this was and looked at Laura. "NO don't' do this to me." Luke begged. "Yes, You have to remember all of it because he does and afterwards. I'll show you other thing that you forgotten. Tonight, Luke you are mine and there is no way out of it," Laura said coldly. "Angel, why are you doing this?" Luke begged and tried to touch her but as soon as they did his skin felt like it was on fire and he back away. "Because, if I don't. We will never see each other again and maybe I'll loose my son as well. I am not going to let that happen. I am going to save you from yourself. Now watch," She commanded and Luke was forced to watch the events on fold before him. "You sure your are going to be okay?" Luke asked Lucky. Luke noticed that the kid hadn't touch his breakfast or said a word since he came down stairs? And he was worried that going to school wasn't a very good idea at this moment in time. "Yeah, I have to go back sooner or later," Lucky said sadly. "I might not stay all day but I'll have at least tried." "Okay, I'll be hear. I have more of your mother's things to go through yet," Luke said and the two parted. Luke watched himself packed Laura's belongs and it wasn't until he found her journals that he wanted to rip it from his hands. Laura watched as he tried but never got near him. She had a sad and hurt look on her face and deep down she wanted to stop this herself but she knew he had to remember and face what he did. Luke watched himself read those words and drink himself into Bolivian. The days went by in flashes and things he forgotten came back. He watched as he yelled at Lucky one minute and cried on his shoulders the next. "Laura?" Luke begged finally. "I know what I did. Don't make me watch it." "You don't' know. You only think you know. Keep watching." She commanded and Luke turned around and watched. A few days before, Luke had beaten Lucky to a pulp. Lucky came in from school and found his father sitting in the center of the room with a bottle in one hand and a bat in the other. "Come here," Luke voice boomed in the room. Lucky's face had fear written all over it but he didn't bolt. He walked towards his father and stood there standing wondering what was going to happen now. "Where you been?" Luke asked coldly. "School." Lucky said his voice shaking from fear. "I told you this morning." "You should stop going. It is a waste of time. You can't learn nothing," Luke said in a drunken state. As the sober Luke watched this and turned his back but the look from his wife that stood not far away forced him to turn around and watch it. He had given up trying to stop the events and now was forced to watch as he put his own son. A kid that he loved more then his own life through hell. "You might be right," Lucky admitted. He wanted to get this over with and go this is room until he Luke's rage vanished and things were safe again and his face showed it. Luke watched himself belittle his son and he wanted to yell shut up. He wanted to tell Lucky that he was the one that was dumb and worthless. , not Lucky, Just as Luke thought things couldn't get worse, they did. The drunk Luke got up and stalked toward his son with cold lifeless eyes. "You know what. I think the wrong kid died. I think Lu could have been a better Spencer then you." and with those words Luke swung the bat. After years of being on the run from the mob and the fact that Luke was dead drunk, Lucky ducked the bat but he did feel the breeze it caused and it suddenly realized that his father meant what he said. He wanted to kill him. Lucky back up and tried to get Luke to stop but he wouldn't. He took one more swing at him and it missed Lucky by inches. Lucky backs up even more and tripped over some of the trash in the room and landed hard on his back. Lucky was laid there in fright as the bat came up slowly for its final blow. Lucky figured it was the end and he closed his eyes and waited. He didn't want to watch his father kill him. It didn't happen; Foster had heard Lucky's yells and the dog came crashing into the house from the back door and leaped at Luke. The dog's body knocked him to the ground and sent the bat flying. Lucky sat up and watched as he best friend tried to rip his father's throat out. Lucky stayed put until he realized that Luke was nearly passed out and he was safe from any attack. It was only then that Lucky pulled the dog off. "Sit," Lucky commanded and he cautiously leaned over to check out his father. Luke was passed out by this time and bleeding from bit wounds on his arms but at least he was alive. Lucky fell back then and pulled the dog to him. He sat there crying and holding on to Foster for dear life. The dog stayed put and guarded his master not once taking his eyes off of the passed out form before him. "Any more?" Luke asked wondering why Lucky didn't let Foster end his life. He should have because that is what he deserved. "One more and then were done here," Laura said with a sad expression on his face. "What? I know beat him and now I know the rest. Why not shot me and get it over with. I don't belong with the living. I earned my death and he would be better off without me." Luke said walking away from her and the scene before him. Luke didn't get to far, Laura popped in front of him and said, "You don't get chose when you die and I'm not letting you walk out on our son. He needs you and loves you. No matter what you said to him or did. You didn't kill years of love that boy had in him for you. Now, with me gone. You are all he has left and I'll be dammed that I let you walk out now. You are going to stick around and rebuild your relationship and you are going to guide our son into manhood. Even if I have to hunt you for the rest of your life to make sure that you do it," Laura had moved close and was inches from his face. Luke saw into her heart at that very moment and he knew she meant every word of it. So, he slowly turned around and watched the rest of what she show him. Luke watched the beating and watched himself pass out on the floor at the battered form of his son on the ground. Laura walked up to him and said, "You want to know why I showed you this?" Laura asked. "To get even," Luke said flatly. "No, to show you the monster with in you. You meet him and talked to him. It was that version that you met a little while ago that beat your son. You got drunk and let him take over. He was always there but until that then you did really well in controlling him. I am going to help you defeat him once and for all. I'm not going to let this happen again. Lucky would never survive it and neither would you. I love you both to much to let it happen." and with those words Laura and Luke vanished from the room they were standing in. Luke looked around at where they were and shook his head violently. "No, get me out of here." he said his voice shaking with fear but Laura was gone. At first, Luke thought he was by himself in the past but he was wrong. "She isn't here. It is just us," a voice said from behind him. Luke turned around and stood standing face to face with his mother. "Your dead?" he said. "Yes, but I have watched out for you. You think I stopped carrying for you after my death. I didn't and neither does Laura. I want to tell you that your daughter is little doll. She has your spunk but like her mother. She is also strong and willing to love. I guess your father killed that in you. I kind of let it because I should have left before it got as far as it did." Luke's mother said as she walked up and took her son's hand. "Where would you have gone?" Luke asked taking in every part of her as he could. After years of being a part, Luke still felt the need of being held by his mother. "I guess your right. Things are different now then were then. Women and children have more rights and more places to go. We didn't. Did we?" she said kissing Luke on the cheek. "We had each other." Luke said softly as he wrapped his arms around her. "Yes, we had that. You always came to my defense but that one time. You couldn't save me. He won and almost killed both of us." and with those words that final day started to unfold. Luke wanted to stop it but he couldn't. So, he was forced to watch it all over again. The place exactly as remembered it and maybe so, it was his memories he was seeing. The house was small and very much lived in but it was clean. His mother on the couch sing along to a song on the radio as she mended one of his shirts and Luke, back at eight years old, lay on the floor doing his homework. Luke knew that down the hall and to the right. He would find Bobbie fast asleep on her bed. This calm scene didn't last to long, because suddenly the door slammed open and stood his father. Drunk as normal and he looked very out raged about something. The boy on the floor suddenly jumped up and ran to his mother's side. She put a loving arm on in and pulled him close. "Hi, sweet heart." the woman said trying to sound normal but she couldn't help to sound afraid. "Hi, yourself. Did you enjoy your outing." Luke' s father said with such hate in his voice that both of them jumped at the sound. "What outing?" the woman said wondering what he was so upset about this time. "Don't lie to me. I saw you today and I want to know why you were with my best friend Tommy Deloca." Luke's father demanded. As he walked toward the two cowering on the couch. "I . . . I was helping him get his wife affairs set up. She doesn't have much time any more and I was doing it for her. This is hard time for the entire family and I wanted to help," she said trying not to stammer but it was hard not to with her husband standing over her ready to strike at any moment. The drunk laughed a cold and empty laugh, "Oh, that so kind of you. You did out if of goodness of your heart. You kiss him for the same reason?" "I didn't kiss him. Why would I? He is your best friend," she said shocked that he would even suggest such a thing. "Lying little tramp," the drunk suddenly yelled and slapped her across the face hard. She started to cry then and hold her face. Luke, who always came to his mother's aid, did it this time as well. "Don't hit her. She didn't do anything to you," the child yelled and he got slapped as well and that slap sent him flying across the room. He laid their stun for a long time as he tried to get the world from stop spinning on him. As he lay there, he watched as he father start to beat on his mother with both fist flying. She tried her best to protect herself but he was to strong and for her. Each blow knocked her around like a rag doll and one of them set her off her feet and crashing to the table beside the couch. She hit her head the wall behind the table sending blood everywhere. The drunk wasn't happy with this. He yelled and kicked her demanding her to get up and take her punishment. She didn't move and he kept on yelling. Luke watched this and trying to find away to protect his mother. He pulled himself off the floor and went to get his father's gun out of the table in the hallway. The eight-year-old then stood not a few feet from his father and right before he kicked the woman on the ground. Luke said in a shaky scared voice, "Stop. Leave her alone." The drunk turned around and laughed coldly. "You little wimp. You don't have the guts to shot me." And he stalked toward the frighten boy. Luke back ups and cocked the gun as he went. "I'll shot," the boy said his voice shaking more. The drunk laughed again and reached out and grabbed the boy's hand and that was final mistake. Luke was so scared that he jumped and let go of the trigger. The gun went off and the bullet ripped threw his father killing instantly. As the body of his father hit the ground, Luke in tears ran to his mother's side and tried to wake her up. "No, he left. He walked out," the adult version said. "No, sweet heart the woman said as she wrapped her arms around him. "He didn't leave not on his own." "Why? What is this?" Luke asked in a shocked shaky voice. He was having trouble absorbing all of it. "Come on, let's walk," she said and they walked and talked for a long time. Luke learned more about mother that night then knew when she was alive. Just before dawn, Laura came back and found Luke standing a lone in the dark think about all the stuff he learned. "Hi," she said as she walked toward him. "I thought your were gone." Luke said. "No, you can't get rid of me. I'm with you for life." Laura said kissing him on the cheek. "What do you mean?" he asked. "You know you know the truth and to make sure you keep control of that monster within you. I'm going to keep watch over you. I'll have help from your mother and I think the both of us can do the job as long as you remember to watch out yourself." Laura said and for the first time since this dream started. She embarrassed him. "I thought I couldn't touch you?" Luke said as they hugged. "I was mad at you. You treated my son like dirt and I didn't like it. Now, I know that you can fix it and make it better. I also have trouble staying mad at you. I wonder why," she said as they kissed. "I'm sorry, Angel. I let you down." Luke said. "No, Luke. You let yourself down. You gave in and your son now knows you felt. You either have to find away to turn him from your path of life or let him live this path out," Laura said. "I'm not that bad," Luke said in his own defense. "No, but you do sometimes go to far and I love our son's heart. I love the idea that he can be better then either of us. So, what are going to do about it," Laura asked him. "I'm going to get him mad at me. He has been hiding it and I earned it. Then, I'm going to rebuild what we had. If he lets me." Luke said still in her arms. "That is my husband and don't worry. Lucky might be like you in lost of ways but I made sure he had my heart." Laura said with a smile. "You did that didn't you," Luke said and they kissed again. "I have one more favor. I know that Helena is causing trouble but don't take it out on Nikolas. He is part of me and I love him as much as Lucky. So, for me, please don't hurt him." Laura begged. "Ok, for you. I'll leave the young prince alone." Luke said. Laura smiled at him and they kissed again. Right before she left, Laura placed something in his hand and said, "A reminder." Chapter 17 Back to Monster Within |
