| Chapter 16 Stefan walked into Lucky's room and found it enveloped in darkness. The only light eminated from the fixture just above the teen's head. He was sitting on the bed looking lost and forlorn, with head still buried in his knees. He didn't even move an inch as Stefan walked over to the bed and sat down. Neither said a word for a long time. Stefan was taken back by how much Lucky reminded him of himself all those years ago. Stefan felt the need to help Lucky more than had since he walked into the room. His heart did go out to this boy, who was suppose to be his brother and those thoughts brought others as well. If Lucky was his brother, didn't he have a responsibility to help him? Stavros walked away all those years ago when Stefan had needed him the most. Stefan realized he wasn't going to do that to Lucky. Stefan took a few deep breaths and asked, "Do you mind if I turn on a light?" "Do whatever you want?" Lucky said, his voice barely above a whisper. Stefan reached over and turned on one small light and said, "Thanks, this is much better. Your mother said that she told about Luke and that you are not taking it very well. She asked me to come and see if I could help you in anyway." "Why do you care? You've made it very clear what you think of Spencers," Lucky's voice was laced with hatred and he looked at Stefan with cold uncaring eyes. "Do you think a blood test is enough to make you a Spencer? Forget it, Count Vlad. I'm not playing your mother's or your game." And with that, Lucky got up from the bed and sat in the chair by the window. He wanted to get as far away from Stefan as he possible could. Stefan followed Lucky and sat down in the chair across from the teen. "I wish this was a game or even a bad dream, but it isn't. I have looked in every document and file my mother and Mikkos had and they all say the same thing. I even had that blood test done by five different labs. Lucky, you might not believe this but it turns out that Luke was my father," Stefan said. This sentence got a reaction out of Lucky that Stefan didn't expect. Lucky looked up at Stefan his eyes burning with cold rage and he shouted, "NO! Luke wasn't your father! He was my father. He might have had something to do with you being part of this world but it takes more than one night to be a father. You are not a Spencer! You are a Cassadine and you always will be a Cassadine! Now, get out of my room and get out of my life." Lucky slid to the floor and let the tears he had been holding in since Stefan showed up start to flow freely. Stefan didn't leave but instead, he slowly bent down and pulled Lucky into his arms. Lucky didn't pull away but he didn't respond to Stefan either. He stayed frozen and unmoving as Stefan tried to ease his pain. When Stefan realized that he wasn't helping, he let go of Lucky and said, "You are right. A blood test doesn't make Luke my father. All it says is that I am not a Cassadine. I had two choices: take Helena's name or Luke's. I choice Luke's because at least Nikolas could hold his head up. If it was just me, I wouldn't care what name I carried. Neither of them were my parents, because they never showed me any love." Lucky looked at Stefan as he said those words, shocked to hear him sound almost human. "Why do you say that? You lived with Helena, she couldn't have hated you all the time?" Lucky asked him. "Yes, she hated me since the moment I was born. It wasn't until I was ten that she started paying attention to me but that was not the attention I really wanted or needed," Stefan said and he sat back down and looked out the window as his mind went back into the past. "What happened?" Lucky asked, sitting back in his own chair as he pulled his legs close to his chest. "Let's just say that you and I have something in common but the difference is that no one ever saved me," Stefan said flatly. Lucky was taken back by this because he never dreamed that Helena would do this to her own son. His opinion of Stefan changed and Lucky felt the need to know more about this man and may be learn how to get immediately, due to sharing the same nightmare Helena created. "Couldn't you tell anyone?" Lucky asked, curious to talk to someone who knew what he was going through. "Mikkos knew and he even went as far as to say that at least I was good for something. None one else had the power to help and I don't think many would have tried, any way," Stefan said coldly. It was clear to Lucky how much he hated the Cassadines. "Why then did you care so much if they lived or died? I don't understand?" Lucky asked him. "I didn't. It wasn't what Luke did to Mikkos or Stavors. I was mad because he took the two people that I thought cared for me. You see, Lucky, I had only a few people that showed any love to me at all. Alexis is one of them. She is my best friend and co-conspirator. The other two were your mother and my Uncle Tony. I thought Luke killed him and I hated him for it. I wanted to make him pay just as much and so, when your mother was brought to the island, I didn't think about trying to help her at least not at first, because I knew he had lost someone he loved. Stefan looked over at Lucky, trying to explain his past actions to the boy. "It wasn't until I started to fall in love with her that I understood it wasn't just Luke that was hurting but Laura as well. She was married to Stavros then and I couldn't do much to help her out. I had no power but talking pulled us closer until one day we both gave in. I told her things that I never told anyone but Alexis. I thought she loved me and I loved her with all my heart but the day she went to Luke, I felt betrayed and angry. I swore then that I was going to make her pay for it. I tried to but nothing I did worked. The more I tried to pull them apart the more they clung to each other. It wasn't until I told your mother that Luke was dead that I realized how much she loved him. I don't know if what we had was real or fake, but I know it wasn't the way I wanted it. I might never find anyone to love me as I loved Laura but I know she never reciprocated that same love back." As Stefan finished talking, Lucky started to realize that the cold hard shell he around him was there to keep him safe from getting hurt. It was then that Lucky saw a different Stefan and it was more like Luke then he expected. Lucky smiled at this and said, "You might not want to hear this but you are a lot like my father." "Why you say that?" Stefan asked, shocked to here Lucky say this. "You both were hurt by the same woman and you both were saved by the same woman. I don't know everything that had happened after dad left Helena. I know that he never really loved anyone besides Aunt Bobbie and Aunt Ruby. He had girls and he used them for fun but he never loved them. I don't think he knew it was until he met my mother. It took her forgiveness toward him for that night to start repairing the pain that was inside him. Laura was perfect to him or at least that is how he saw her. That is the reason he called her Angel! My mother is my father's angel. She is the same to you," Lucky told him. "I never thought about it that way. I guess you are right but that still doesn't tell me why you are not upset about this," Stefan asked. "I can't get upset about anything. I feel nothing inside me right now but a hole that can't be filled. Dad was my best friend and partner in many scams. I protected his back and he protected mine. A lot of people might think that a child shouldn't be that to a parent but they were not on the run from the mob. I had no one to turn to, but my parents. I learned early on who to trust and who not to. We depended a lot on each other because of it," Lucky told him. "I understand that because Nikolas and I functioned the same way. He had no friends because of his isolation on the island and being the prince. I tried to make up for it by giving him all my time and love. So, I see how you feel and I'm sorry because no matter what I feel about Luke right now, I do wish he was alive, for his families sake," Stefan said. "Don't get me wrong but why do you say that? You hated him didn't you?" Lucky asked him. "Yes, I hated him but the moment he was falling over that wall, something changed. We went through a lot to get you boys and we faced things together. I learned more about your father in those few days than I did in the past years combined. I stopped hating him around the time he saved my life. I figured I owed it to him to return the favor," Stefan told Lucky and he went on to tell Lucky about the bomb and the events that led up to them finding the house. Lucky laughed at the idea of Luke being forced to work with Stefan and their trials and tribulations to save their sons. After that Lucky and Stefan talked for hours about each other's lives and they learned about each other and how the events in their lives molded how they thought now. Stefan realized then that Lucky had become important to him, as well as the rest of the Spencer family. He knew then what Ruby had been trying to say to him the day she came to visit. As Stefan walked out the door later that day, Lucky was just about ready to close his eyes when called out and said, "Welcome to the family, Steven." It was first time that someone had called him that and coming from Lucky, it meant that he was being welcomed into the Spencer family. For the first time in his entire life, Stefan really felt like he belonged. Chapter 17 Back To Luke's Secret Past |
