Chapter Twenty Two

Lucky hated this day more than any of them. Today, all the Cassadines were
forbidden to even acknowledge his presence. Mikkos died this day at the hands of
his father. Lucky either stayed in his room or spent the day with Mrs.
Landsbury. He snuck thought the secret passage and down to her room. Lucky
knocked on her door and she let him in. "Hi, kiddo," she said.

"Hi, I got bored so I came down to see what you're doing. I can leave if I'm
bothering you," Lucky said awkwardly.

"You're not bothering me. I make sure I get this day off, just so we can spent
time together," she said, pulling out a tray of cookies.

Lucky smiled at her and grabbed one. They were sugar free because Mrs. Landsbury
was a diabetic and Lucky couldn't have too much sugar because it made him hyper.
She sat down at the table and pulled out a deck of cards. "All right. Who is
ahead?" she asked him.

"I am and you might end up working for me if you keep this up," Lucky said with
a laugh.

They played cards all day and Lucky ended up winning most of the games. She made
him supper and then sent him back up to his room to work on his lessons. When
Lucky was gone she called out. "You can come out now."

Stefan exited from the secret room and sat down in the chair Lucky sat in most
of the day. "I hate this day," He said.

"He does, too and maybe more. This is bad Stefan, and you know it. He is just a
little boy and they make him suffer for his father's crimes. Which aren't too
bad because Mikkos deserved to die," she said.

"I know that but what can I do? If I demand too much then they will throw me out
of the family and that will leave him alone with them," Stefan said.

"I know and I'm not blaming you but you might want to make this day up to him
tomorrow. He is lonely and needs to laugh a little more," she suggested.

"I will Aggie, and thanks for keeping him company," Stefan said and then
disappeared the way he came.

Margaret Landsbury walked to her small desk and pulled out a photo. "I blame you
Michael Cassadine. I'm not blind. That boy looks a lot like you and so does his
father. You should be protecting your family but your not and my son is just as
bad. You both should have taken your children with you but now the third
generation is paying for your mistakes, too," she said to the photo.

Lucky was sitting on his balcony, drawing a picture of the horizon. Stefan
walked up on the balcony and joined him. Lucky didn't hear him walk out. Stefan
sat and watched him for a few moments. Stefan took a real good look at the
eleven-year-old. Lucky was a little small for a kid his age and he hardly ever
smiled. Stefan wondered if Luke and Laura noticed this before he did.

"Lucas are you all right?" Stefan asked him.

Lucky was startled and looked at Stefan in surprise. "How long have you be
sitting there?" he asked him.

"Not long. I missed seeing you yesterday," Stefan said.

"I did, too. Is Alexis back, yet?" Lucky asked him.

"No and she won't be back before the end of the month. When Nikolas gets done
with lessons today, why don't we go to the cliff and see what trouble we can get
into," Stefan said smiling at the boy.

Lucky smiled but it never showed on the rest of his face. Lucky nodded his head
and got up to get ready to leave. Stefan watched him go and cursed himself for
letting them destroy him. He missed the spunky little five-year-old that had
almost no fear, but Stavros killed him along time ago.

Nikolas and Lucky were exploring the caves and Stefan watched from his perch on
the rocks. Nikolas had a way of putting a smile on Lucky's face that didn't look
forced. Stefan was glad they took this outing.

Nikolas was standing in the opening of the cave. It had rained a lot over the
past few weeks and the rocks were slippery. Lucky walked up behind his brother
and gently tapped him on the shoulder. Nikolas hadn't expected him to do that
and he lost his balance. Nikolas slid down the rock without much warning. Lucky
watched in horror as his brother slid down. The thought of what Stavros would do
to him ran through his head. Stefan got to Nikolas the same time Lucky did. "I'm
sorry. I'm sorry," Lucky cried as he reached his brother.

Nikolas looked up at him and laughed. "I'm all right. I just got a little
scratched up." He got to his feet and started to dust himself off.

Stefan checked the boy out to make sure he was okay. Lucky just stood there in
horror at what he did. Nikolas looked up at his brother and tapped Stefan on the
shoulder. He turned and noticed that Lucky was pale even with the good tan he
sported year round. Stefan got to his knees and looked Lucky right in the face.
"Stavros will not find out about this. I promise you this will stay between the
three of us. Nikolas isn't hurt too bad and the scratch can be explained without
too much trouble," Stefan said to the scared boy.

"He will kill me," Lucky stammered.

"I won't let it and don't worry about it," Stefan said pulling the boy close.
Lucky was trembling in fear and it took Stefan a while to calm him down.

Nikolas watched the two of them with complete hate for Stavros. He hated
pretending he was his father but what made him hate Stavros even more was how he
treated Lucky. Nikolas and Lucky planned on taking over when they were older and
he couldn't wait until that day. He planned on making Stavros pay for everything
he did to his brother.
