Chapter nineteen

Stefan and Alexis watched the boys run around the cave openings. They weren't
worried about them getting lost or hurt. The caves were dead ends a mile inward.
Stefan laughed as Lucky jumped out from one of the caves and frightened Nikolas.

"He sure bounces back quickly," Alexis said.

"He is getting used to being shoved around by Stavros but I think it was
Helena's threat that got him to relax," Stefan said.

"She really said all that?" Alexis asked Stefan.

"Yes and more. I think my brother might have gone too far. At least now, Lucas
will not have to live with Nikolas' hand me downs. Tomorrow on your time to the
main land, I have a list of things you will buy Lucas and if I left anything
out, you are to purchase it for him," Stefan told her.

"I have waiting to do this since the day he arrived. At least we can make his
life a little happier," Alexis said.

The Cassadines sat around the table eating supper, everyone but Stavros. He was
sulking in his room. Lucky was playing with his food not because he didn't like
it but because he really didn't feel well. He looked up and said, "May I be
excused?"

"No, Lucas come here," Helena told him.

Lucky got up on shaky legs and went to stand before her. He almost jumped back
when she reached her hand up to his forehead. "You have a fever and you don't
look good. Tell me the truth. How long have you felt ill?" Helena asked him.

"All day. I didn't want to be a bother so I didn't say anything. I'm sorry," he
said looking down at his feet.

"You're not a bother and you have to tell us when you don't feel well. We can't
read your mind," Helena told him and then turned to Stefan. "Help him to bed. I
will send the doctor up," she ordered.

Stefan took Lucky to his room and Helena went for the doctor leaving Nikolas and
Alexis at the table. "Lucas didn't say anything because of my father," Nikolas
said fighting the words out.

"Yes. Stavros has made him afraid of asking or telling us anything. I want you
keep an eye on him when he gets better. Lucas will not tell us what is wrong but
he might you," Alexis said and they both went up to check on Lucky.

The doctor took one look at him and ordered Nikolas out of the room. Everyone
looked at him in shock and Helena asked. "What is wrong the boy?"

"He has the mumps and Nikolas hasn't been inoculated either. Master Stavros
ordered me not to immunize the boys in any childhood disease. He said they don't
leave the island much and didn't see any use in it," the doctor told her.

"He what!? I want Nikolas and Lucas' shots caught up when this is over and from
now on you take orders only from me. Especially when it comes to their health,"
Helena said guiding Nikolas out of the room.

Lucky got worse as the days went by. The doctor checked on Nikolas everyday and
night. He wasn't sick yet but they weren't taking any chances. The Cassadine's
discovered that Lucas got sick because one of the kids at the party had the
mumps weeks before and everyone thought he was better but he wasn't. Nikolas
skipped meeting the doctor and went with Alexis to visit Luke and Laura.

He knew he didn't feel too hot but he was sure it wasn't what Lucky had. He
walked into Luke and Laura's prison and the second she saw him she asked.
"What's wrong with you. You look pale. Nikolas, come here and let me see you,"
she said.

Nikolas walked up to his mother and let her check his temperature. "You have a
fever. I love seeing you but you shouldn't be here," she told him.

Alexis looked at Nikolas and said. "You didn't tell us. Nikolas, you are as bad
or even worse than Lucas."

Luke looked at her at the mention of Lucky's name. "What is wrong with him?"
Luke demanded.

"He has the mumps and his fever keeps going up. The doctor is with him all the
time but if fever doesn't break soon, they are going to send him to the main
land and place him in the hospital," Alexis told them.

Laura grabbed Luke by the arm to hold him back and gain comfort. "How long as he
been sick?" she asked Alexis.

"About a week," Alexis told her. "And his temperature isn't below 104."

"He as temperature of 104 and you haven't sent him to hospital. I don't believe
you. I'm not the greatest parent on this planet but I know a child with that
kind of temperature belongs in the hospital," Luke said walking up to her face.

"We have a complete staff of doctor's and nurses. They are very well trained and
know what's best for Lucas. I'll make sure you are kept up to date with his
welfare. I will contact you through the guards everyday and you can talk to me
personally. I hate to cut this visit short but Nikolas must get back and be
check out. I don't want to place him in too much jeopardy," Alexis said.

Luke watched with hate filled eyes as they left. "I don't place him in too much
jeopardy. Lucky is sicker then he is and she acts like it is nothing. I promise
you Laura. Lucky dies and I will kill everyone of them," Luke said and headed
outside to get some air. He has made hundreds of plans but Lucky was the only
thing keeping him locked up. Laura knew it was the truth and she wouldn't be
able to stop him. She was worried about both boys but the sound of Lucky's
health problem worried her the most. She watched those tapes and realized he
wasn't very health. He was too skinny and spent a lot of time by himself
according to Nikolas just sitting around drawing. He wasn't the same boy she
used to know.

~~~~~~~~~~
Everyone was worried about Lucky. His temperature did go down but not by much.
He still was really sick and no one knew what to do about it. Nikolas did get
the mumps but not as bad as his brother. He was placed in the same room. So,
everyone didn't have to divide their time. Stavros hadn't been seen in days and
Stefan hoped he fell off the face of the earth.
Alexis was true to her word. Everyday Luke and Laura were called to update them
on the boys. Luke was demanding that Lucky be taken to the hospital but Helena
didn't agreed. She was sure Lucky would get better on his own without a
hospital.
Luke had just cut off for the third day in a row. He looked at Laura and said.
"I get that old bat in my sight and I will string her up. She isn't listening to
me but hey what's new? Lucky is her pawn in this sick game but he's my son. I
give a damn if he lives or dies," Luke said throwing the phone against the wall.
Luke didn't care what anyone said any more. He was tired of giving in and was
determined to get out but he had to make damn sure Lucky would live.
Lucky opened his eyes and looked around the room. He still felt bad but his
fever had dropped down to almost normal. Stefan was sleeping in a chair between
Nikolas and Lucky's beds. Lucky got up and grabbed a blanket off of the trunk
and placed it gently over Stefan's shoulders. Stefan opened his eyes and said.
"Get back in bed. You shouldn't be up."
Lucky just smiled and at him and climbed back into his bed. Stefan checked his
temperature and was glad to see it at 99. Lucky was fast asleep way before
Stefan found that out. He was still sick but he was going to get better.
Lucky spent the rest of the month in bed and was going stir crazy. He wanted to
get up and move around by no one was letting him. Nikolas got out of bed before
he did and Lucky couldn't see why. Stefan had found a way to keep Lucky's mind
occupied. Helena had ordered his room to be stripped and completely cleaned. So,
Stefan had talked Helena in letting him redecorate Lucky's room and Lucky was
going to pick everything out. This room was going to fit Lucky's personality.
Everything was ready to be put in when Lucky was finally allowed to get out of
bed. The staff worked all day to get the room ready for him that night. Everyone
was glad he pulled through. Well, almost everyone! Stavros wasn't too happy
about it and he wasn't hiding it. Methos found out about his little stunt and
beat him so bad that he couldn't hide the bruises. He stayed in his rooms until
he could show his face and when he did, he was treated like he was a monster but
that only made him hate Lucky more.
