| Chapter One Lucky suddenly woke with pain all over and when he tried to open his eyes. He found it impossible. Lucky was trying to raise his arm and a voice said, Lay still. You have been in accident and your hurt. Why cant I open my eyes? came his hoarse question. Do you know your name? asked the voice avoiding his question. Lucky Spencer. Answer me! Why cant I open my eyes? he demanded getting a little concerned. Son. Rest your in hospital and everything is going to be all right. Just rest. Im going to get the doctor. He will answer any of your questions, the nurse said. The nurse quickly left the room. She was shaken and heads toward the desk. The kid in room one name is Lucky Spencer. I think his father has called several times checking if he was here. You might want to get him here right away. The boy is asking about his condition, the nurse said picking up another chart. The nurse at the desk in Mercy General picked up the phone and called the number Luke had left. She was trying to find the words to tell him about his son. Mr. Spencer. We have your son here at Mercy General. I read from you note you want him transferred to General Hospital is that correct? the nurse said when Luke answered. Yes. How is he? Luke asked. He has a few minor burns on his face. The more major burns cover his hands and arms, but it is his eyes that we are concerned about. He must have looked right into the explosion. The doctors here are waiting for the flash burns to heal, before making a decision on the damage. the nurse said sadly. Oh God. came Lukes voice over the phone. Have him moved now! Luke demanded. Yes. We are sending him over right now. she said a little taken back from the outburst. Luke and Laura were pacing the emergency room. They have been looking for Lucky since the news of the train wreck. Luke had known about Lucky going to live in Jasons boxcar. He had been calling every hospital in town looking for a sign of him. The hours seemed like months. He still hadnt told Laura what the nurse said about his condition. Luke. Youre not telling me something. Hes my son. I have the right to know. she pleaded. Laura, Im not telling you because they dont know themselves. Im not jumping to any rash conclusions until the doctors here look at him. Luke said putting his arms around her. Before Laura could ask any thing more. Lucky was brought in. She opened her mouth to scream, but Luke put his hand over it. She looked up at him with shock and from the look on his face. He hadnt expected any of this. Luckys eyes, arms and hands were covered in bandages. His hair had been singed almost completely gone. This didnt look like the son, she saw just days before. Please God. You cant punishing him for my mistakes. both Luke and Laura prayed silently. Lucky had tried to figure out what was going on. No one was telling him anything. Why? What had happened? he wandered. Suddenly a very familiar voice came into the room. Cowboy, can you hear me? Luke asked sitting down beside his son. Laura had moved to the other side. Dad. Whats going on? No one is telling me anything. Lucky voice pleaded. Lucky. Your moms here and Ill we will answer any of your questions. Luke said. He was fighting to touch Luckys face, but the doctors said not to. He burns had to heal before they could. What happened and why cant I open my eyes? Lucky asked trying to remain calm. The sound of his father voice worried him. He didnt sound like his father. There was a train derailment down by tracks. You must have looked out right when it happened. The explosion had almost crushed the boxcar completely that you were in. Your hands and arms have second degree burns but your face has only third degree. Your hair looks a lot like mine in places. Luke said reaching over and grabbing Lauras hand. He didnt want to talk about the next part. Dad. My eyes! Whats wrong? Lucky demanded. Lucky. They dont know. They think you looked right into the explosion. Your retinas are damage. How bad, they dont know. Luke answered. Im blind. Lucky whispered. The facts of the accident slowly coming back at him. He suddenly tried to jump up but Luke stopped him. Lucky. Dont. Your just making matters worse. Luke said holding him down. Lucky. Stop Laura pleaded. Whats wrong. Well get you threw this. Lizzie. We were watching the sun set. I was holding her. She was in front of me. When everything happened. Where is she? Lucky forced out. Luke and Laura just sat and looked at each other. Should they tell him about her, they both wandered. Tell me? Where is Lizzie? Lucky yelled. Shes dead. The only reason your alive is because she was standing in front of you. She had taken most of the explosion. Laura said placing a hand on his chest. NO. SHE CANT BE DEAD!!!! Lucky yelled and this time. Neither Luke nor Laura could hold him. Bobbie had to give him an ejection to calm him down. No one knew what tell him. How do you explain the only reason you were alive is because your best friend was standing in front of you? Laura turned to Luke. I feel guilty. Lizzie is dead but it could have been Lucky. Im thankful it wasnt. God, Luke dose that make me a bad person, she asked moving into his open arms. I dont know Angel, because I was think the same thing. he said looking down at his sleeping son. |
