Chapter 10

      Silence.

"Sonny?"  She asked her husband who just stood there rooted down.

He heard his wife,  but it was the shock that didn't enable him to anwser.  He kept playing the words over and over again in his head.  Sister.  His sister.  But how?  Was it his mother's daughter?  No, he would know if it was.  Right?  Then it's Mikes.  The realization the Mike lied to him hit him like a ton of bricks. Anger quickly replaced the shock in his eyes.

"Sonny?  Don't go there.  Sweetie look at me."  Carly said figuring that any minute Sonny was going to flip.  "Just breathe."

"Breathe?  He lied to me."  He said calmly.  Too calmly.  He looked around the room for the closest thing to smash when he noticed her.  She stood there with fear in her eyes.  Was it fear of him?  He wondered.  No, it looked like fear...fear for him.  Before he knew it he was across the room, standing infront of her.  He quickly pulled her into a hug, as if his life depended on it.  They stood there for minutes, as Carly watched on tears in her eyes.

      "Courtney... I ah, I'm sorry."

Shocked at his words she asked, "Why would you be sorry?"

"For never knowing about you, never being able to help you, to find you..."

"Hey, don't,"  She said the tears that had been threatening to fall down finally did, "don't be.  You have nothing to be sorry for.  It's not your fault.  How could it be?  You didn't know.  Stop blaming everything on yourself." She said forcefully.

"So your Mike's daughter?"  He asked.

"No."  She said as she walked over to the window.  "He's not my father.  I have no father."  She spat as the tears poured down her face more quickly.

He knew that look she had before she turned around and went to the window.  It was the same look he had.  The look of knowing the pain of being left.  At the moment all he wanted to do was kill Mike. Kill Mike for hurting his new sister.  He walked over to her and held onto her whispering "I know"  while she brokedown in his arms.

Carly snuck out of the penthouse, knowing that Sonny and Courtney would need some time alone.  She opened the door and softly closed it running smack dab into ALexis

"What do you want?"  Carly asked.

      "Where's Sonny?"  She demanded.

"He's busy.  Go model some lingerie."

"Well, I need to talk to him.  I need his help."

      "Missing a shoe?  Glove?  Sock?"

"I don't have time for this Carly.  I need to talk to Sonny."

      "Maybe I could help?"

"I don't need your help."  She sneered.

"Listen, Lexi.  We could be friends if you would just back off my husband."  She said poking her in the chest, empahizing my husband.  "Keep your hands and eyes off him.  Or you're going to regret it."

Alexis stood there speechless as Carly made her way to the elevator.  She turned around and said to Johnny, who had witness the whole exhchange,  "don't let her in Johnny, or you'll anwser to me."  She waved and stepped into the elevator.

      The Docks

She walked down the docks as she often did.  She went to her favorite bench and sat down.  She was happy that Sonny had a sister.  He could sure use one.  But there, of course,  was one bad thing about this.  Mike.  Why would Mike lie to Sonny?  Didn't he learn his lesson?  Carly told herself not to assume without all the facts.  Mike stood beside her during the past months and she would return the favor.  There could be a reason who he kept iCourtney a secret adn she would wait until she found out.  But Sonny, he wouldn't.  Carly knew that they were both making improvements in their relationship and thise would make them move about a hundred steps back.  She was so engrossed into her thoughts she didn't notice someone sit beside her until he spoke.

      "Carly."  Lucky said civilly.

      "Lucky."

What was she supposed to say to the cousin that hated her?  So they just sat there.

"Why?"  Lucky asked, breaking the silence.

      Puzzled she asked "Why what?"

"Why do you do the things you do?  I'm not trying to be rude, it's just why do you do the things you do?"

      Carly thought about the question.

"You know, from other people's point of view, I'm the whore of babylon.  I'm a golddigger, tramp, schemer you name it they think it.  I'll be the first to admit I didn't do such nice things in the past, but who has here in Port Charles?  It's just that  I act, then deal with the consequences.  When someone I love is in danger I cook up a scheme, that always goes wrong, to help the person I love.  With Michael it was moving into the Qs and with Sonny,"  She sighed, "it was turning him into the FBI.  I did it necause I wanted to protect him.  It sounds ridiculous, but I was about to snap.  I couldn't take being left out of the loop, being treated as a child. I felt if I didn't do something, Sonny or I were going to snap. It was just too much.  Do you kind of see why I do the things I do?

      "Yes."

      "Yes?  You actually understand why?"

      "Yep."

She just sat there looking at Lucky.

"You know we kind of got off on the wrong foot."  He began.  "Maybe we could try it again."

      "You serious?"  She asked disbelievingly.

"Yeah.  Hey, I'm Lucas Lorenzo Spencer."  He said offering his hand.

She looked at it for a moment then took it.  "I'm Caroline Leigh Corin- Benson,  Nice to meet you."  She smiled.

"You know... Caroline Leigh Spencer would sound much better."  He told her.

"Yeah?  Well, I'm not sure your father would think that."

"Dad?  Ah, don't mind him.  It's just that you're a spitting image of him."

"Hey?  I thought we were starting over again.  No more insults?"  She joked.

"Woops, sorry my mistake."  He laughed.   They talked a bit more,  when she realized she'd been sitting with Lucky for the past hour.

"Hey Lucky, don't take it personally, but I got somewhere to go..."

"Nah, I don't mind. I'm ah, kind of glad that we worked this out.  I just got one request."

      "Name it."

      "Just don't mention Liz."

      "Deal, under one condition."

      "Yeah?"

      "Don't compare me to Luke."

      He laughed and waved goodbye.

She sat back on the bench and sighed.  Maybe it would all work out.
