THE UNIVERSITY IN BRIEF
The University of the West Indies ( UWI ),Mona campus is part of a three campus university system. The campus is situated on what was formerly a Great House (plantation type dwelling) and it is in the capital of Jamaica, Kingston. The other campuses are located in the countries of Trinidad and Barbados with affiliations in other countries. Because of the Mona campus being somewhat secluded, it is actually quite serene and manages to seperate itself from the normal hub-bub of urban living.
It is from an academic standpoint the most prestigious ,known and popular of the various tertiary institutions in the West Indies or Caribbean region. It likes to market itself as the "premier education institution in the region" and can well substantiate this claim as it has produced many of the leading lights in the region.
Because of its status as a regional institution it has students enrolled from from all over the West Indian region and beyond. It is therefore highly dynamic although obviously the Jamaican influence is heaviest. It has made tremendous strides over its 54 years of existence due to this diversity of social and cultural background. It is therefore hoped for that the University will embrace the blind segment of its student population as well. You can check out their web page at UWI Mona .
