To the Linux world: WTF, again!

***************

A lot of things have changed in the linux world since I last posted here. There is so much improvement, it is too much to actually quantify. Just to try, I will redo the table I did last time:

Feature M$ Linux note
Security maybe absolutely -
Stability yeah yup -
Hardware support LOL! yup Linux will always be the leader in number...
Price $$$$$$ $0 - ? (service contracts cost on Linux)
Architecture ports ? LOL! 15? 30? MS seems to have a hard time managing just one...
UNIVERSAL installation format yup nope This just means that it will install properly accross versions
Ease of installation yup see note certain flavors have it down quite well now
Central configuration yup nope This is today's gripe!
Ease of use/configuration yup so-so Desktop: Linux      Server: Windows
Coherent development team yup nope (1 distro windows, >100 Linux)
Support for closed source development yup yup Some people are OSS purists...
Business/financial software LOADS some -
Easy to learn by just using yup see note Linux is getting quite better...

You want to write a man page? If a complete newbie can't learn to use it without looking up less than 2 more pages, RE-WRITE THE DAMN THING!!!
Yeah, I stick to that opinion.  When was the last time you looked up how to make grep style "regular expressions" from a noob standpoint?  That stuff isn't in the man pages.

Although MS used to laugh, Linux has become a force to be reckoned with.  Microsoft now fears swimming animals.  Linux is why they "reported" the need to lay-off 5000 people.  Not quite the windows alternative it could be yet though...  But why not?

Since no one else is doing it, I will.  I have a server box running Windows 2000 server, do you think you can help me replace Windows with Linux?  I have started a blog to document the whole process, would you like credit for the help?  I will write better documentation for the software if someone helps me understand it all.  I will send the docs to the Linux Documentation Project, if the docs are deemed worthy.

My major gripe right now is that the Windows versions of open source server software come with far more intuitive setup programs than their Linux counterparts.  Am I the only person that does not want to share the home directories in samba?  How about FTP?  Shouldn't the super technical crap be under the advanced button?

A project will be started by me called SMUG, or "[Simple Server System] Management/Update GUI".  If possible, it will be included into (or replacing portions of) other existing software.  "Webmin" and "PCLinuxOS Control Center" seem like a nice targets :)  If I develop and direct this project, Linux users will have a reason to be "SMUG" about their server.

Instead of being a dumbass and just complaining, I am taking a proactive stance to what I see is a problem.
