VALUES – Who needs them?

LESSON PLAN -- RESPECT

 (3 to 5 class periods)

1.     Grade Level Designation:  Junior High School

2.     Instructional objectives:

Upon completion of this unit on “respect” the students will be able to:

Ø      Define the qualities of respectful behavior while using correct vocabulary terms relevant to such behavior.

Ø      Demonstrate an understanding that respectful behavior is an essential quality to building good character.

Ø      Demonstrate an understanding of the many facets of respect:  Respect for others, property, different opinions, rule of law, and for oneself.

3.     Anticipatory Set:

Read the opening poem about respect.  Brainstrorm a short list of what George Washington Carver is trying to communicate in this poem.

4.     Instruction:

  1. Have students take turns reading the material about character.  One effective method is to use the “Read, Cover, Retell” method with students working in pairs.  (One student reads a short passage, covers the material read, then retells the concepts in his/her own words.  The second student listens and gives feedback.  The roles are then reversed.)
  2. Have the students complete a 3-5 minute fictional quickwrite about someone behaving in a disrespectful manner.  Some should write about disrespectful behavior towards another person (or another opinion, or the law, environment, property, self, etc.).  Some papers should be shared and ideas brainstormed about desired changes in behavior, and how this would benefit those involved.
  3. Students complete the quiz about respect.

5.      Closure:

Re-read the poem by Ernest Fitzgerald.  Emphasize the concept that “respect” is an essential element for a person who wishes to achieve “happiness” and a sense of  “inner peace.”

6.      Evaluation:

Ø      Collect a newspaper article demonstrating actions reflecting respectful behavior.

Ø      Collect a newspaper article demonstrating actions reflecting disrespectful behavior.
