Engaging Students Through The Design Of Learning Spaces

Today's Millennial college students are visual learners, social networkers, Internet enthusiasts, optimists, multitaskers, gadget fanatics, and inductive learners.  Their learning styles and modes of interaction are not in sync with the traditional classrooms and lecture halls found throughout American higher education.  National systems that measure the levels of engagement between students and faculty are strongly correlated with the student success. Yet, many young students are becoming disengaged from the very learning community colleges and universities have to offer.

Can we afford to risk the success of our future students?  What else can higher education do to enhance student learning and thus student success?  We propose that using space, Learning Studios, as a tool that can facilitate engagement between students and faculty and thereby enhance student success!

Learning Studios provide a mixture of relaxed discussion and study areas, workspaces that expand or contract depending on the students' needs (Herman Miller, 2004). Most of all, these spaces encourage active and collaborative learning and increase interaction between students and faculty - a key benchmark of student engagement that leads to student success!
