THE LEARNING CENTRE'S VOLUNTEERS

Volunteer Tutors are coordinated by Learning Centre staff in conjunction with the City of Vancouver volunteer programming office. New volunteer tutors must go through a general orientation to the Carnegie Community Centre. They must also be oriented to the Learning Centre area. They fill out two sets of forms: one for the volunteer office and another for the learning centre. The CLC forms are a vital tool used by Learning Centre staff to match tutors to students. Currently, there are tutors for:

                 1)English
                 2)Literacy
                 3)Math
                 4)Computers
                 5) GED

Other tutors can be requested by the clients.

Volunteer receptionists are critical to the operation of the learning centre. The main tasks include:

                 1) Greeting the public as they come into the CLC,
                 2) Answering the telephone,
                  3) Directing people to other services within the building,
                  4) Maintaining the security of the room,
                 5) handing out and recording volunteer ticket distribution.

The City of Vancouver Volunteer office in conjunction with the CLC staff manage the ticket distribution system.

Other volunteers are sometimes required for event setup and coordination. This is done on an ad hoc basis depending on the requirements of the event.

Other groups use the CLC from time to time. It is important for them to respect the autonomy of the space and not restrict access to regular learning centre patrons or impede their use of the centre except when a consensus has been reached by all members of the learning centre at the Student Tutor meeting (attended by Students/Tutor and staff members).

There are also clear procedures and rules associated with the use of computers in the learning centre.
