HOW THE LEARNING CENTRE WORKS

The CLC operates from the 9am to 5pm Monday through Friday and 1pm to 5pm on Saturday. It is staffed by Capilano Faculty instructors, Monday through Friday. Volunteer tutors are coordinated and supported by Capilano Instructors. The coordination is done by offering tutor training courses, tracking and matching students and tutors, facilitating meetings and workshops, and planning extra curricular activities for volunteers and clients of the Learning Centre. Various groups also use the Learning Centre space. These include several writing groups, discussion groups, and ad hoc groups and committees.

The main job of the Learning Centre is to facilitate learning. This is primarily done by matching volunteer tutors with drop-in students. The term drop-in implies that there is an openness regarding structure of the learning environment. The main principles we use are to:

1) Provide a safe environment.
2) Promote participation of learners in defining their learning needs and      learning program.

This favor a self-directed, non-formal methodology that highlights one-on-one tutoring and individualized learning programs and plans. When appropriate workshops or workshops series are provided on a variety of topics including basic arithmetic and mathematics topics, grammar, and personal development topics.
