Reading and Writing Around the Room

Students practice their reading and writing skills at the “Reading and Writing Around the Room Center.” They walk around the room with a special pointer and read words from environmental print such as posters, word walls, signs, etc.. They can also write the words around the room which enables them to practice their writing and handwriting skills.

Teachers need to model how to:

·        Use and store materials

·        Walk around the room quietly

·        Read and write the words quietly

Activities

·        Walk around the room and point using a pointer and read words that you know

·        Walk around the room and point using a flashlight and read words that you know

·        Walk around the room and write down words that you can read from posters, signs, poems, charts, word wall, etc.
