Language Arts

The “Language Arts Center” allows a student to practice a variety of skills. Students are able to practice general skills, along with grammar and phonics.

Teachers need to model how to:

·        Use and store materials

Materials

·        Depends on the activity

General Activities

·        File Folder Language Arts Games

·        Match synonyms

·        Match antonyms

·        Illustrate antonyms: Have students use index cards and write antonyms (one on each side of the card) and then illustrate pictures for each antonym.

·        Match compound words

·        Match abbreviations

·        Match contractions

·        Match homophones

·        Fill in the missing letter or words (either a worksheet or a laminated sheet). Examples: letter- Y_u put trash in the tr_ _ _ can.; words- I am _____ years old.

·        Copy words with a certain characteristic from a story (example: contraction, end in –ing).

·        Illustrate compound words. Write the word and then draw 2 illustrations (one for each part of the word).

·        Illustrate homophone words. Write the words and then draw 2 illustrations (one for each word).

Grammar Activities

·        Do a grammar worksheet

·        Punctuating with pasta: Use pasta to insert punctuation marks.

·        Using prepared laminated sheets (large print) with missing punctuation, use milk caps (or other suitable material) with the appropriate “stop sign” on it.

·        Do Mad Libs

·        Sterofoam Coffee Cup Activity: They are easy to label and to replace. For example: two cups, one labeled nouns and one labeled verbs and they have about 15-20 words and have to decide which cup the word goes in... Good for lots of things: period & question marks, math facts, complete & uncomplete sentences, etc.

·        Make three columns for Nouns-person, place & thing. Then print out some cards to go with each. They draw a card & decided which column to put it in. I even found pictures to use instead of words.

Phonics Activities

·        Phonics games

·        Use the “Phonics Phone” (curved PVC pipe to hear what is being said)
