I'm passionate about education. In 1999, I started a career in teaching. One of the first things I learned as a teacher was to "unlearn" much of what I was "taught". Learning about the abacus taught me to rethink how I was taught math during my elementary years. While teaching the abacus to my 6th graders, I realized how many could not apply the concept of Place Value to operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. I never made the connection in elementary school (or high school for that matter). I just blindly "borrowed" and "carried". It's my goal to revive the abacus as a tool that creates a strong mathematical foundation in the learner. That being said, please enjoy these pages I've put together. Aloha, Edward Barinque |
