Dear Katie, Kaci, D.J., and Addison,
Here are the answers to your questions.
Q. Why did you participate in the war of Goliad?
A. I did not participate in the war at Goliad. At the time the
fighting occureed there, I was leading my own army in a retreat eastward
from the Colorado River back to the Brazos River.
Colonel James Walker Fannin commanded the Texian army at
Goliad. I had ordered him to retreat from there and join my army,
combining our forces into one large army. But as sson as Colonel Fannin
tried to retreat from Goliad, he was surrounded on the open prairie near
Coleto Creek. After a day long battle, he surrendered his army. They
were marched back to Goliad, where they were executed on Palm Sunday,
March 27, 1836.
Q. How long did the war last?
A. It was not a long war. It began October 2, 1835, with the battle of
Gonzales. It ended April 21, 1836 with my victory over Santa Anna at
San Jacinto. So it lasted only about six and a half months.
Regards,
Gen'l Sam Houston
