King of the West Saxons - not to be confused with Ethelred the Unready (Ethelbert II). Reigned 866-871. Brother of Alfred the Great, who succeeded him as King. This is the only memorial brass to an English king - it actually dates from about 1440. He was killed by the Danes in Battle at Martin, about 25m. north of Wimborne.
The first English martyr, killed by the Romans for sheltering a Christian priest.
