My target groups at UCLA Hillel:

Freshmen
Residence Halls
Students interested in Arts/Culture
Students interested in community service/tzedek work
LGBT students
Students in Greek Life
What is this Target Group terminology all about???
My suggestion is to pick three or four target groups! Don't take more than four or five target groups. You will often be given lots of other opportunities by Chaim to do other interesting jobs and sometimes too many targets groups with other tasks can be too many areas to focus on.

My goal for each target group was to do one program a week.

Target Groups are a way of  thinking how to reach out to students. Target groups are a tool for JCSC to do engagement on campus when there are so many students on campus and so many different ways to get students involved in Hillel.
Freshmen:
Freshmen are a great target group for so many reasons. They are easy to find because most of them live in the dorms! So you always know where to find them. Programs for freshmen that are easy to plan: ANYTHING TO DO WITH FOOD, trips to LA museums, film screening, TV shows, nature hikes, etc. I found it really easy to plan for freshmen. The best thing to do is find one or two freshmen in the beginning of the year to help you plan your freshmen programming. Freshmen programming at most Hillels is usually done by a FYSH (FIRST YEAR STUDENTS OF HILLEL) programming board.
Residence Halls:
Residence Halls at UCLA are really bureaucratic and try to keep all religious groups out :) However, residence halls are the best way to meet one of you largest target groups-FRESHMEN! So, my advice is co-sponsor a program with the resident halls right away! Avital Ungar who was a program assistant in the dorms is a great person to co-sponsor programs with next year. The De Neve quad usually has their dorm meetings Monday evenings-this is when you would request a room to use in the dorm.
Students interested in Arts/Culture
From meeting you I can obviously tell that this will be your favorite target group to work with at Hillel! Which is great because Chaim loves JCSCs doing programs for this target group. Also, Perla Karney our Dortort Artistic Director is AMAZING TO WORK WITH!!! Set up a meeting with her right away. She will give you some great ideas and you can share your great ideas as well. Some of the programs that we did this year for this target groups...seeing tapings of shows...art museums...meeting LA jews involved in the entertainment industry...Your options in programming for these students are endless!
Community Service
This is a great target group to work with at UCLA! UCLA students while very busy-are very interested in helping out the community. You need to provide insightful and meaningful community service projects for UCLA students and they will definitely come!

Students to tap into for community service projects:
Illana Hersocitz
Jenn Lorch
Joseph Miskabi (former ASB participant)
Nedda Azizian
Roman Groisberg (former ASB participant)
LGBT Students
UCLA is very lucky in that several years ago a UCLA Hillel staff member created a group called Mishpacha which is UCLA's Jewish LGBT group on campus! They meet once a week in the LGBT center and they have about 2-3 programs a month. We will also be having a Jewish Peer Intern that will work with this target group as well. JEWISH PEER INTERNS is an LA based internship program for the Los Angeles Hillels. You will learn all about it next year during your LA JCSC training! The mishpacha president will also be coming to Hillel Student Board meetings-currently there are still searching for a person to fill this position.
Students involved in Greek Life
This is a very tricky target group to work with at UCLA because not a lot of Jewish students are involved in the greek system here-but the ones who are-are not really involved in Hillel. So my advice to you is reach out to a few students such as Alexa Broida, Matthew Shapiro, Karen Siles, Illana Van Allen-and have them create programs with your for students involved in the Greek system here. I usually took students out for pizza at Enzo's in Westwood. Our Greek liaison is Dan Goldberg who will probably need a lot of training in how to create a program and reach out to all Jewish studnets in the greek system. But he will also be a great resource in taping into this target group.
