Intro to UCLA Hillel:

The Hillel at UCLA (which is what we are always suppose to write on flyers) is a fun and exciting place to work!

This year there are lot of fun people around the building to hang out with, talk too and usually drag to campus. There will be some staff changes next year so I will just include the staff members who will be here next year on this website.

Rabbi Chaim:

He is the Director and Rabbi of the Hillel. Chaim oversee eveything that goes on at Hillel. He leads many Jewish learning program, fundraises, sometimes leads service and ensures that necessary activities take place.

Carol Bar-Or

She is the Associate Director. Carol oversees the budget and works directly with the Adult Lay Board.

Aryeh and Sharona Kaplan
They are the Jewish Learning Initiative coordinators. They coordinate programming and learning for the Orthodox student population. They are wonderful and DO so much for Hillel.

Leslie Wallach
She is the Community Events Coordinator. She plans and carries out events for our community members/UCLA staff and faculty/donors.

Douglas Coleman (who we call Doug)
He is an all around great helpful guy. Doug takes care of maintenance issues and sets up the building for events.

JCSC and Staff Responsibilities
As a staff member you will be required to attend a monthly staff meeting with the entire Hillel staff.
As a fellow you will be responsible for attending a weekly programming meeting.
You will probably have to work every other Shabbat.
You will have to table around 10 hours a week.
You will have to run SCUBA about every other week at Hillel.
General program planning for yout target groups.
Serving as a liasion between Hillel and other campus organizations: AEPhi, Jewish Student Union, Bruins for Israel, Mishpacha, Ha'am
Attend monthly JCSC meetings

Supervision
One hour of supervision a week is your right, privilege and gift as a JCSC. It is your chance to be absolutely honest about your strengths, weaknesses, questions, concerns and hopes. At its best, supervision can make you feel much more in control and confident about everything that you need to be doing. At its worst, at least it's an hour away from the maddening crowds.

Advice:
Be prepared with an agenda. You'll inevitably diverge frmo it, but its good to have an ideas about you need to discuss.

Some questions to ponder during your first few supervision sessions:

1. What are your personal and professional boundaires, both with students and other staff members?
2. What is the expectation for JCSC hours? How do JCSCs ensure an adequate amount of personal time
3. What decisions do JCSCs have the authority to make? How involved should your supervisor be in JCSC decisions?
4. What are appropriate risks to take as a JCSC fellow.
5. How many hours a week am I expected to work? If I work until 11 pm is it okay for me to come in at 11 the next day? (ed. note-YES IT IS!)

If you are feeling that your supervision time is inadequate for any reason, talk to your JCSC coordinator to get some advice. It is very important that your supervisor understands your needs and wants. This is vital so that you have a strong and productive year. If you don't feel comfortable at any point let your JCSC coordinator know! Team LA has a unique circumstance in that we get to know our JCSC coordinator very well-so you the him/her to your advantage!!!
