The Worst Story Ever

This is my worst story ever and it was just about the worst thing you could ever imagine. I mean, I guess I could think of something a bit more horrifying to see, but for my life so far, it was absolutely the worst thing I ever saw. I’m about to share this story with you because I can’t believe I saw it with my own eyes, and although it’s really, quite horrible, I feel this need to share it with other people. You may not want to read this. But it is about as real as my real life stories can be.

I’m at the mall with Hattie and Corey. It’s cool, we’re being all mallratty and hanging out and trying on clothes. We were heading downstairs so Hattie could look for swimsuits at the Finish Line, and decided to take the stairs since they were straight ahead. Little did we know....

As we neared the staircase, I was walking in front of Hattie and Corey and decided to shift a bit to the right because there were people walking up, and I wanted to give them room. There was a little kid and an older woman carrying something that turned out to be a stroller. We reached the stairs and I started to walk down, but I realized this lady was having a really hard time with her stroller.

At this point, time sort of slowed down, and we all heard this “thud,” as loud as thunder clapping in the sky. I looked further down the stairs to see another woman following them, with something in her hand. The lady with the stroller was shouting down to her to help her carry the stroller. The lady behind her shouted that she dropped something. I realized the stroller might fall, so I grabbed it with my left hand.

And just as I did so, I looked down the stairs in front of me at the woman’s feet. There was a tiny, red faced infant lying on the step. It was so tiny, it barely was the width of the step. It let out a blood-curdling cry, and the realization came--The lady dropped the baby. As gravely as I can say it: Holy shit. (I didn't actually say that out loud though).

She picked up the baby and we helped them with the stroller and went on our way down the stairs. There was a couple rounds of holy shit by me, and we could hardly talk about what we had just witnessed. All the way to the Finish Line, we could hear the baby upstairs crying. In fact, by the time we left the Finish Line, Corey thought he could still hear the crying.

Now, that had to have been the worst thing I have ever seen in my life. If not the worst thing I have ever seen, definitely the worst thing I have ever heard. Seriously, that thud was so loud, and to know it was that poor little infant’s head....It just doesn’t get anymore sickening than that. I don’t know what that lady was doing so that she actually dropped a child, but hopefully it doesn’t happen very often.

As far as we know, the baby was okay. Later that afternoon Hattie saw the same people pass by and the baby was fine. But I had to wonder later on, if something like that subconsciously harms a child. I know from experience, that traumatic experiences for children mark them for life in some way or another, and I have to think that babies are no exception. They may not remember things as an older child would, but I think somewhere on some level, they carry it with them the rest of their life. Not that being dropped on a mall staircase is going to scar that child emotionally forever, but I think everyone needs to think a little bit more about how our children are affected by incidents. You can’t always prevent the incident, but it makes a hell of a difference along the way if you talk about it. Again, not that this lady will need to sit her child down and tell it she dropped it, but hopefully you know what I mean.

So anyway, that is my worst story ever.
