Grand Canyon, Arizona
sun in the smoky Grand Canyon
The Grand Canyon was a big disappointment.  Covered in smoke from prescribed fires, we could barely even see the sun let alone the canyon itself.  The best part about this was leaving the canyon at night. The most beautiful sunset the entire trip (incidentally my entire life) happened after we left the Grand Canyon, driving through Arizona.

Sunset Crater, Arizona
We stopped by sunset crater, which is the remnants of a volcano that erupted 1000 years ago, blackening the surrounding area and leaving it covered in hardened lava.

Albuquerque, New Mexico
We spent a couple of days in Albuquerque.  New Mexico is deemed the 'land of enchantment' and I can see why.  The old adobe pueblos in old town enchanted me, especially the plethora of interesting shops.

Roswell, New Mexico
We thought Roswell would be a good place to spend Halloween, but aside from the UFO museum and the many amusing allusions to aliens sprinkled throughout the town (including alien eyes on the street lights) the quiet town disappointed us.
