Schofield Pass August 5th 2006 by Mike Downey

Beautiful Emerald Lake near the top of the pass

Overview: Schofield Pass is a mountain pass between Crested Butte and Marble in Colorado. A 4-wheel drive road crosses the pass from Crested Butte and drops down into the rugged Crystal Canyon, passing by such sights as the Crystal Mill. The site is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike.

The beautiful town of Crested Butte
Mount Crested Butte...the super rich suburb of Crested Butte which sits at a whooping 9,375 feet above sea level
Passed Mount Crested Butte is this gorgeous valley where the East River meanders and flows down to Gunnison. We followed the River up to Schofield Pass
Emerald Lake...it has this beautiful green tint to it porlly caused by minerals in the mountain above
Schofield Pass (10,707). The plan was to go on down through the Crystal Canyon to Marble but we ran into trouble later...
A waterfall along the south fork of the Crystal River, I believe right outside of Schofield Park
Another shot of the waterfall...the pond below the falls had a beautiful green color
The waterfall and the pond
They really mean it too...the hill down into Crystal Canyon was ridiculous...one of the steepest roads in Colorado
At least they gave us fair warning...its funny because some wrote in the top left "they really mean it"
My Grandpa crossing the Crystal River on ATV
Rugged Crystal Canyon. There were downed timbers all along that stretch of the river...I assume an avalanche knocked them down there
This really shouldnt qualify as a road...my grandpa made me get off because of how steep and dangerous the road was getting
The Crystal River as it flows right out of the "Devils Punch Bowl." Today the Devil Punch Bowl is synonymous in most peoples mind with the crazy road that goes by it. This is where it got too dangerous and we had to turn around.
The large hole between these two waterfalls is whats called the "Devils Punch Bowl." Its a large, deep pond where steam rises out looking like a kettle. The Crystal River is filled with these beautiful cascading waterfalls...I only wish we didnt have to turn around
The "road" if you can call it that...along the Crystal Canyon at the Devils Punch Bowl. You can see my Grandpa and the ATV on the right...thats where we turned around
The "road"
A rainbow along the Gothic Road across Schofield Pass

I am currently a student at University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA), where I intend to get a degree in Political Science and Geography/Environmental Studies. When I'm not studying, you will find me in the mountains. I have been climbing since I was pretty little and have done climbs throughout California, Colorado and Arizona, including the highpoints of those states. I have done Mount Whitney and Mount Elbert, but I plan on doing some even higher mountains, maybe Aconcagua, Mount Mckinley or Kilimanjaro, Check back with me in about 10 years. Meanwhile you can check out some of the other trips reports:
