Technology: What is it?
What is technology?
Technologies are advancements and inventions. Technologies are machines
that are designed to increase the quality of life, essentially to make life
easier.
Examples
weapons - nuclear weapons, smart missiles
transportation - safety (airbags, navigation systems), alternative power
communications - wireless, cellular phones, pages, satellites
entertainment - games, dvds
Cultural Mandate
Genesis 1:28. (NIV) "God blessed them and said to them, 'Be fruitful and
increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea
and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the
ground.'"
The Cultural mandate instructs humanity to govern what is on the earth, so that
both creation and mankind could reap the benefits. In the time when these words were given
to Adam and Eve, the world was a very different place. Now, in addition to the literal
commmand to care for the earth, we have the task or making use of technology, wisely.
Our Role in Developing/Using Technology
Our world is full of available technologies. Christians in history have made
good use of technologies, such as the printing press. We now are faced with the concept
of discerning how, when and where to use the technology available. We have to weigh
the pros and cons of a technology and make good decisions regarding it.
