Adjusting velocity

WARNING:
NEVER exceed the maximum safe velocity of 300 feet per second. Obey the rules of your paintball field.

ALWAYS wear proper paintball eye protection when playing paintball.

If you're playing for a whole day, I recommend checking your shooting velocity again occassionally (like around midday when it's usually warmer) to make sure your gun is not shooting hot.

Four ways to adjust your Sterling's shooting velocity:

  1. Changing main springs and/or valve springs;
  2. Using a regulator;
  3. Using a velocity adjustable bolt; or
  4. Using washers.
Each method has its limitations, consequently it's probably best to combine two or more of these methods. E.g., use springs and/or washers to set velocity higher than what you want and then use a regulator and/or dialable bolt to lower velocity to the desired level.

You might also consider running your Sterling on liquid CO^2 or nitrogen/high pressure air (N^2 / HPA).

For liquid CO^2, do not use a regulator or remote line. Instead, use a siphon tank installed on gun. Running liquid is especially useful for playing in cold weather (enables a higher shooting velocity), but increases wear on your 'o' rings and cup seal (as well as decreases CO^2 efficiency). Liquid CO^2 may make your shooting velocity more consistent and increase your shooting range somewhat. It is recommended that you use a valve guide that offers increased flow (like a turbo valve) so that enough liquid can pass through your gun. I haven't yet tried my Sterling on liquid.

For nitrogen/HPA, ensure that any and all hoses fittings are rated to safely operate at the higher pressure, and that the nitrogen/HPA system includes a built-in regulator designed specifically for nitrogen/HPA.
