Suplementary Cup
Quarter Final
Ringley Park v Blackbrook
This was a very good game in spite of a strong wind and a dreadful pitch..All the players need to be congratulated for displaying such skill in these conditions. Dave Renshaw controlled the cup-tie well.
Playing with the strong wind Ringley dominated the first half without ever really taking control. It was 2-0 at half time, the goals coming on 20m and 35m. The last one came when the Blackbrook defence waited in vain for an offside whistle.
Playing with the wind after the break Blackbrook began to press forward and on 45m and 50m Gareth Thomas narrowly shot wide from difficult chances, and on 58m a Danny Walsh-Carl McConville move brought a great save from the Ringley 'keeper. Two minutes later Sean Milligan saved the day for Blackbrook pushing the ball for a corner. The resultant corner was struck perfectly and Ringley were 3-0 up.
Blackbrook were not giving up and pressed remorselessly and on 64m were rewarded when a long Gareth Thomas throw was headed home by John McGowan.
Ringley almost scored on 67m when Phil Eden kicked off the line, then just afterwards A hard Danny Walsh shot was brilliantly saved as was the follow-up shot by John McGowan. Danny Walsh then hit the post before a good Liam Philpott strike made the score 3-2.
In spite of several players suffering from knocks Blackbrook kept up the pressure and on 78m an unusual bout of 'ball-watching' by Ringley enabled Liam Philpott to hammer home the equaliser. About six minutes of stoppage time was played during which Ringley snatched the winner.
So for Blackbrook it is on to Whiston tomorrow for their first cup final with a squad which will need an early night to replenish their energy after such a pulsating encounter. All Blackbrook's squad played well and the fightback from 0-3 down showed considerable maturity and grit. In defence Phil Eden and the vociferous Luke Graham were outstanding whilst Danny Walsh and Carl Gilchrist defended well and caused Ringley problems with accurate passing.
