I often wondered how to hear the Father’s voice. I expected to hear booming thunder or see a burning bush. But it is not that way for us. Our flesh wants goose bumps and some awesome ‘spiritual’ experience. Hearing from God is a natural experience. It’s just like hearing your own voice. Or talking with your mom or dad.
That still, small voice...
I Kings 19:9-12"9 And there he went into a cave, and spent the night in that place; and behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and He said to him, "What are you doing here, Elijah?" 10 So he said, "I have been very zealous for the Lord God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I alone am left; and they seek to take my life." 11 Then He said, "Go out, and stand on the mountain before the Lord." And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; 12 and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice"
1Co 6:19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?
So the Spirit is now inside of us. We don’t hear him from outside, but inside. In our own thoughts.
The word says we know the Father’s voice.
John 10:4 And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. 5 Yet they will by no means follow a stranger, but will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers."We need to stand in faith on that scripture. Believe what the word says.
Experience is the best teacher for learning the Father’s voice. You learn by trial and error. Often when you listen to the father, it goes un-noticed because things work well. It’s when you don’t listen and things fall apart that you come to realize it was the Father speaking to you.
For instance, I was buying a car and I had the nagging feeling that I shouldn't buy it, well I did and it was a HUGE mistake. Also, in smaller things, like I was going through a drive-in at the bank. I had this fleeting though of going in a different lane. I didn't recognize it as God and ignored it. Well I ended up wreaking my truck. Then afterward I realized it was God!
I Cor2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.
God wants us to hear and understand Him. It’s his desire for us to commune (communicate) and fellowship with Him.
I Cor 2:16 For "who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct Him?" But we have the mind of Christ.
So we can hear the spirit of God because we are spirit and we have the mind of Christ.Rom 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
We develop the mind of Christ by renewing our minds. As we grow in Christ we learn to hear the Spirit better. Prove is testing, trying. Good, acceptable and perfect is degrees with perfect being mature and complete.
We are BORN of the Spirit (John 3:6). So we are born and we become ‘baby’ Christians. Well babies don’t walk and talk right away do they? They have a type of communication at first that allows them to get immediate needs that are essential to life. They don’t know what they are saying and they don’t understand what we are saying to them. They are comforted just by our being there. But slowly word by word we learn to communicate on a deeper level. To both speak to our parents and understand them. We learn by trial and error. In small steps. Until we eventually grow to be able to communicate freely with the. So it is with our father God. So with God being our Father we are born with the ability by fellowshiping with Him to learn to hear and speak with Him.
