What is Intercession??
Def: “an extension of the ministry of Jesus through the body, the church, whereby we mediate between God and humanity, for the purpose of enforcing the victory of Calvary”(Per Redemption Complete)
Young’s definition: a meeting between, to come or fall upon, to meet with, come between, to meet with in behalf of one.
Jesus is THE intercessor. His very life was intercession. When he was on the cross His actions were interceeding for our life. Everything He did was intercession for us. He said we would do greater works than He and we are conformed to His image. That is to be made like Him.
Isaiah 53: 4 Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. 5 But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed 12 Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great, And He shall divide the spoil with the strong, Because He poured out His soul unto death, And He was numbered with the transgressors, And He bore the sin of many, And made intercession for the transgressors.
Rom 8:34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.
John 14:12 "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.
Romans 8:29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.
Purpose:
Luke 17:21"the kingdom of God is within you" . . .
Matt 3:2 "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!"
Repent means :to change one's mind, i.e. to repent to change one's mind for better, heartily to amend with abhorrence of one's past sins.
So it is not just repentance of sins, but also bringing your mind into captivity to Christ.
Matt 6:10 “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven”
The kingdom is: royal power, kingship, dominion, rule. Not to be confused with an actual kingdom but rather the right or authority to rule over a kingdom of the royal power of Jesus as the triumphant Messiah will:of what God wishes to be done by us
So Jesus needs to have rule over us. Repent the kingdom of heaven is at hand doesn’t just mean repentance of sins, it is changing your mind to act like God acts. Presenting Jesus to the world. That is God’s Kingdom within you.
- To bring the abundant life.
John 10:10 “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.”- To reconcile God’s people to him
2 Cor 5:18 Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation
This was seen through the intercession of Moses for the people. Gen 18:16-33 also,
Exo 32:9 And the Lord said to Moses, "I have seen this people, and indeed it is a stiff-necked people! 10 Now therefore, let Me alone, that My wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them. And I will make of you a great nation." 11 Then Moses pleaded with the Lord his God, and said: "Lord, why does Your wrath burn hot against Your people whom You have brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? 12 Why should the Egyptians speak, and say, 'He brought them out to harm them, to kill them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth'? Turn from Your fierce wrath, and relent from this harm to Your people. 13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, Your servants, to whom You swore by Your own self, and said to them, 'I will multiply your descendants as the stars of heaven; and all this land that I have spoken of I give to your descendants, and they shall inherit it forever.' " 14 So the Lord relented from the harm which He said He would do to His people.
- For Salvation of others
1 Timothy 2:1-8 Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, 2 for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. 3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
- To Bring God’s Will into the Earth
Mt 26:39 He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, "O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will."
- Freedom, Liberty and Healing, in other words for the Spirit to move. This brings the POWER of GOD to work in peoples’ lives.
Luke 4:18 "The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed;Luke 11:20 But if I cast out demons with the finger of God, surely the kingdom of God has come upon you.Now the kingdom of God comes with power to bring about all these things.
Mark 9:1 And He said to them, "Assuredly, I say to you that there are some standing here who will not taste death till they see the kingdom of God present with power."So intercession is many things. Sometimes it’s taking another’s burden and bearing it for them (through Jesus in us), praying to help deliver God’s release to them. Sometimes it’s bargaining with God. Being the mediator between God and Man. (Jesus through us). Sometimes it’s just speaking one word. God tells you a Rhema(prophecy) and you are the vessel in which it is expelled to the earth.
It can be like when you take medicine. The medicine goes in through the mouth and effects other areas of the body. When you interceed, you can be the 'mouth' and other areas of the body(of Christ) are affected.
