She was born in Roosevelt, Utah, the daughter of a prominent businessman. She became interested in acting when the family moved to California. She achieved her greatest popularity playing the part of Nurse Lamont in the Dr. Kildare series. She was married 13 years to her second husband, Leo Durocher, and took such an active interest in his career that she became known as "The First Lady of Baseball." She has written two books: Day With Giants and The America We Love.

"I recall playing practical jokes with John Wayne [in 1947]. I once got a whole bunch of keys and had little tags made that said, "If lost, please return to John Wayne, RKO Studios. Reward." And I just dropped them all over town. [He got a lot of] phone calls, people showing up at the studio. He never learned who did it." (-Nielsen).
