TRIBUTE
Captain Bill Jacobsen, US Army
Captain Jacobsen (age 31) was the highest ranking officer among the 22 people killed when suicide bombers attacked a military mess hall in Mosul, Iraq on Tuesday, December 21, 2004.  Others who died included four American civilians and four members of the Iraqi security force.  Dozens of others were injured in what is being called the single deadliest attack against American's since the invasion of Iraq.  This attack has been part of a series of attacks designed to threaten plans to hold general elections on January 30, 2005.
1973: Captain Jacobsen was born in 1973.  He grew up in a military family, moving often.  His father is a veteran of the Vietnam conflict.  He retired from the Army in 1992 with a rank of lieutenant colonel.

1998: Jacobsen joined the Army after graduating from BYU with a business degree.
1995: Jacobsen married

2004: Captain Jacobsen was serving as a primary teacher in the Lacey 3rd Ward (Lacey Washington Stake) when he was deployed to Iraq in October.  He had never been deployed overseas before.

He served in Iraq as part of the U.S. Army's 1st Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment.  While helping to secure the city of Mosul, one of his roles was to stand a top an armored vehicle and dispense seemingly random judgments upon the military-age young men which other soldiers had rounded up.  In reality, an informant sat in the armored vehicle with live video feed identifying those who had joined the growing insurgency.  The fine line between stopping insurgents and unfairly punishing innocents is difficult to maintain when casting such wide net.

2005: Jacobsen was laid to rest in Charlotte North Carolina where his parents live.  His wife and children have also moved to Charlotte to be closer to family.  Contributions to the children's college funds can be made.
