What is the best part of being an author? Being able to stay home with my children. For many years I worked outside my home, but this blessing of being able to raise my own kids, at home, where we belong, is an answer to prayer.

The worst? There's no downside. Unless you're one of those people who requires sleep. I have real trouble integrating the "retire to thy bed early" portion of D&C 88:124 into my life.

What advice would you give to aspiring authors?Too many people believe that you should find your own "voice," and avoid imitating others. Nonsense. We learn to speak through imitation, and learning to write should involve the same process.

Find a writer whose writing inspires you, and copy that person's style. Learn to phrase sentences the way the writer does. Learn to vary your sentence length the way that writer does. Be shameless.

Write poetry. Heavily regimented poetry that requires you to wrap language around a standard. Limericks. Haiku. Ionic pentameter. Hymns. Eventually, when you've learned to write, you'll find the confidence to rely on your own voice.

Who has inspired you to become an author? Louise Fitzhugh, author of Harriett the Spy. Ray Bradbury, who caused me to believe there's magic in words with "The Sound of Summer Running." Emmett Watson, columnist for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. My parents, who thought everything I wrote was brilliant. (Good thing they didn't tell me I was pretty! ) My patriarchal blessing, which not only directs me to write, but is so brilliantly composed that I marvel every time I consider it. Revelation. God's understanding of language leaves me breathless. And author Kristen Randle, who's almost that good.

What is (are) your favourite scripture(s)? In recent months I have found the 121st Section of the Doctrine and Covenants to be particularly demanding. The psalm of Joseph that introduces that section leaves me in tears; the Lord's response to Joseph's prayer causes me to straighten my spine and plunge in again to the work. If every Latter-day Saint were to read that section it, discuss it in their families, memorize it, we'd become a truly Christlike people.

What is (are) your favourite hymn(s)?

I found out God was real while singing "I Know that My Redeemer Lives." I cannot sing that song because of the lump that fills my throat.

I found out that Christ was the Saviour while singing "There is a Green Hill Far Away."

And I discovered the Church had the authority of God during a chorus of "Ye Elders of Israel."

What are some of your favourite things to do? I'm a homeschooling mum of seven, so we spend our days looking for ways to become better educated.
