SCHOOL: Martin Soler Middle School DATE: May 2001 GRADE: 7th NUMBER OF STUDENTS: 40 UNIT/ACTIVITY: Soccer/ History, definitions/terminology, rules, equipment, safety, review foot position stance, shooting, passing, throw in, heading, and corner kicks. Skills test on all skills. TIME: 90 minutes EQUIPTMENT: (a) 1 soccer ball per student (b) 1 soccer skills evaluation sheet per student (c) 1 soccer knowledge evaluation sheet per student (d) 40 pencils (e) whistle (f) CD player or cassette player (g) music CD or cassette (i) Stop watch (j) mats, cones, and dots (to create target for sidelines on field outside or in gymnasium (if raining) (k) 2 soccer fields (l) 5 soccer goals (m) pinnies: 8 red, 8 blue, 8 yellow, and 8 green STANDARDS: 7 BENCHMARK: Participates in a soccer competition. Record scores, perceptions regarding the field and opponents, and other reflections about the personal value of the experience (a) Check all equipment before lesson begins (b) Have different style soccer balls for students (c) Pick up all balls and cones after the lesson (d) Warn students about soccer balls rolling in their path (e) Check playing field for any uneven surfaces and have them filled in before class begins (f) Be sure students are not kicking the balls near/towards any roadways |

- Have music playing before students come in from locker room. - As students come in from the locker room, they will check in with teacher for attendance and get number for order of skills evaluation. - One student will lead class in warm-up activity - Student leader will choose activities to perform. Total time for warm-up should be 5 minutes. |

- Students are in groups of 8. - A total of 5 groups. |
Groups will be decided by teacher based on performance through entire unit. - Teams should include players with different ability levels. |
- Listen for your name to be called. - When I call your name get in a group with the other students I call on. |

Transition to outside |
Students take pinnies for each team/group. Each group goes outside. |
- One team will not be in pinnies - The groups take: + a soccer ball for each student + 10 cones per group + 1 Evaluation sheet per student + pinnies if the team has them. |
- Do not run or push. - Meet me out on the soccer field |
- Review all skills learned throughout unit: + passing + shooting + heading the ball + corner kicks - Each group will have a goal to practice at. Be sure all students in the group have a chance to practice each skill - If you have any questions 1st look for help with in group, then if you still need help ask the teacher. |

- Students scattered on gymnasium floor with at least 5 feet of space between each other. - Teacher will pass out written evaluation and pencil to each student. |
In Locker Room |
- In groups of 8 continue with games and evaluations - Have teams rotate after every 16 minutes. - The odd team will be the ones taking the evaluation. |
- Student go inside to gymnasium. - Students bring in soccer balls, cones, dots, and pinnies. |
-Students meet inside gymnasium |
- Go inside and wait in gymnasium. - Take all equipment inside with you. |
- Select 4 groups to play 2 games on soccer fields - Select 1 group to come with the teacher and perform evaluation exam. - Group performing evaluation should be away from games - Students performing evaluation should have their evaluation sheet with them - Evaluation is performed individually |
- Groups playing games, remember to use skills learned - Group taking evaluation try your best. |
- Students will take a written evaluation of knowledge of soccer skills. - Students will have 12 minutes to complete evaluation. |
- Fill in evaluation using best answer possible. - Think of everything you have learned throughout lesson. |
- After the games remember what teams played each other and remember the scores. |
- Every team should play each other - Every team will sit out one round in order to take evaluation exam. - Two team will not take evaluation exam today. |
- Be sure to do check in with teacher to get the evaluation from. - Listen to student leader for warm-up |
