The very first album release from Our Lady Peace was a historical one. Naveed met with widespread commercial success, and started a long line of loyal fans. Even though I myself was not a true fan until 1999, I can be sure that there were plenty right from the beginning in 1994. (I was only nine when it was released-- incapable of understanding anything like Our Lady Peace!!)

In my opinion, Naveed never got what it deserves by way of commercial success. But of course, thats not OLPs big problem right now, is it? The fact that this album didnt do as well just highlights OLPs very humble beginnings, and how they have now become a force to be reckoned with in the Canadian music sceneand lately even the American scene!
Naveed
The sound of Naveed was truly different from the other music being released in the same year. The coarse guitar riffs coupled with Raines mesmerizing voice and thought-provoking lyrics were what made this album so breathtaking. In fact, it is these vivid lyrics and emotional imagery that play a huge role in the overall effect of Naveed. The unrefined lyrics on songs like Starseed reflect the uninhibited spirit and inspiration that went into the album. Relative to future albums, Naveed is very simple and organic in nature. The band has said that while it is true that  there exists some inspiration from Middle Eastern philosophy, the album is not religious in any way. I know I didnt get a religious sermon listening to Naveed. To get this idea, I think most people just saw the cover art and thought thats what the record was about.

I love this album, but it took a while to get used to. Naveeds sound is very distinct from the others. For example, Raines vocal quality is thicker and has more substance in songs like Hope, and especially Is it Safe? The bass line is heavier, yet the songs remain strangely melodic. However, in general, Naveed  was much more spontaneous. It seems as though the band was able to free themselves a little more with the first record.
