Gravity
Gravity was written and recorded mostly in sunny Hawaii, so the lyrics are naturally more upbeat and optimistic. Of course, its not all sugar and spice. All for You, Not Enough, and Sell My Soul seem to tap into ever-present personal issues, but Raine twists the words so listeners can get as much as they can out of each song; so they can put their own interpretation into it. To me, thats a major identifying mark for OLPs lyrics.

One particular song that I immediately fell in love with is Not Enough. I cried when I heard it because I felt it described me absolutely perfectly. I had been going through a particularly tough time, and I really appreciated the entire album for its incredible sincerity.

Certainly this album has gained Our Lady Peace considerable recognition and airplay south of the border. Well, its about time, isnt it? It looks like OLP has finally cracked big brothers market while still maintaining creative control of the music. Some would attribute this new success to Bob Rock, but honestly, whos doing the singing? Whos on drums? Whos playing guitar?

Yes, whos playing guitar? The newest addition to the Our Lady Peace family is a fellow by the name of Steve Mazur. He replaced Mike Turner, who left the band early on in the production of Gravity. So far Steve seems to show a lot of promise, and hell likely be an ideal replacement. (Is it just me, or does he look like Robin Black without the makeup? Im serious, check out that nose! And what is Poco?) But Steve still has a ways to go before I completely accept him. I was shattered when I found out Mike had left. He was a pillar in the original formation of the bandand now the only original member left is Raine. When I heard the news I thought it was some awful prank and refused to believe it. But when the news was confirmed, I felt like it was the end of an era. So I would do something to remember him on my website. I added a small section with a few Mike Turner quotes, pictures, a poem he wrote, and an email I wrote to the band.

I could talk forever about this, but I would run out of space. Gravity is awesome. Go and buy it.
The fifth album from Our Lady Peace is their first produced by the legendary Bob Rock. Gravity is simple and organic, the antithesis of Spiritual Machines, released a mere 15 months before. Gravity may be simple and down to earth (no pun intended), but it successfully maintains a solid rock n roll presence. It swells up and down between intense guitar reverbs and mellow harmony coupled with relatively basic drum work.

Gone are Raines caterwauls that so identified the music in the earlier days. Thankfully for some OLP fans, the sporadic drawn-out wail showed up in songs like Innocent, and A Story About A Girl. Those songs pretty much nourished my longing for the Supermans Dead discord of the early days! I miss them! Now theyve been interwoven with beautiful but forceful melodies like Bring Back the Sun and Sell My Soul.
