The second release from Our Lady Peace is a strong, heavily layered album with a wide array of different sounds. Truly, Clumsy is very unpredictable--you have no idea what youre going to hear next! It is very diverse, with heavy emotional feeling in each song. This is what makes it my favourite of all the Our Lady Peace albums--and thats a tough judgment to make.
I found this album very personal, in that it was easy for me to relate to. It is very somber and dark, while still maintaining an unconscious positivity by the end of the last track. However, my favourite song on the album is 4am. It moved me to tears when I first heard it. It has so much sorrow. The simple but passionate lyrics are a perfect example of the insight that went into this record. Clumsy was certainly worth the three year wait for most fans!
The song that the album was named after, Clumsy was a huge radio and television success, but quite often misunderstood. First of all, many do not understand that Clumsy is very symbolic, and the song is not about a cold-hearted man watching another man drown. The song is about how we as selfish humans are so caught up in our own endeavours that we dont even pay attention to the miseries of our fellow man. Ill be waving my hand, watching you drown, watching you scream directly relates to this. In a sense, a person could see another crying for help, waving his hand to get attention...and this peron could very well not even realize that his fellow is drowning. To him, the waving man is saying hello, and he waves back...completely oblivious to the fact that this unfortunate individual is about to die.
